Default A friend asked me if he could chase a $1,400 loss with $20k...

in other words, use the 20k (if necessary) to get back his 1,400 that he's down with a local.

In short, I gave him a definitive NO.

He's new to gambling, so he's too naive and clueless to even consider a 'strategy,' and he's playing with a local that would probably limit him if he started betting more than about $3k/game (so martingale/double-down is out...for a number of other reasons as well.)

A few years ago, I might tell someone like him that it's possible. Maybe just play RAS ncaab totals on a double-down system or something, assuming he could get higher limits. But honestly, there's no way I could recommend in good faith that he even consider it.

What's the most you've ever seen someone lose chasing a relatively small ($1,000) loss?

I've chased a 600 dollar wagers...with another 600 dollar wager...and then a 1200 dollar wager. Lost em all never again.

    I don't understand - if he's got $20,000 on hand, why chase $1,400?

Tell him to chase on 3 or maybe even 4 pucklines (+1.5) in NHL, he can thank me later.

    Pride.

He's got all this money saved up before he moves out to L.A., and thought he'd make a little more gambling on football. I told him from day one: "the only way you learn how to win at gambling is to lose...and the period of losing can take years." Of course he didn't believe me.

He is the epitome of the word "square bettor." It's hard to find guys these days that are reliable legit fades, but he is a square in the purest sense. For what it's worth, he really likes Texas tomorrow night. I got this text from him about an NBA game tonight: "The Nets are +14 to the Hawks, the hawks have been messing up lately. Looks like a winner." I told him he'd be better off flipping a coin.
