Default Please Help Support Internet Gambling

Ask your congressmen to support HR-2046.

This bill is being introduced by Barny Franks and will help reverse some of laws that are screwing up Internet gambling.

Please urge your congressmen to support this bill. Please follow the link below. It will take all of 2 minutes or less.

Asking your congressmen to support HR-2046 without any bribe is meaninless. Why don't these billion dollar poker sites and online books lobby against internet gambling ban? It seems to always work for the tobacco and pharmaceutical companies...

If you do nothing, thats meaningless. But you bring up a great point. Everyone of the sites should be forming an alliance to fight these laws.

2046 does nothing for the people here. It allows the sports leagues to opt out.

Sit back and wait for a bill that repeals the UIGEA.

Would a gambler go back to a system that has proven itself to be false? Or would he erase it and try to find another, more reliable system.

Practice civil disobedience through gambling.

It's a start.

Agreed. Offshore books were really shortsighted in not protecting their interests by not creating a lobby for their industry.

Well, I sent the letter anyway, and these are the comments I added:

There really are 2 kinds of gambling - those that involve skill, which people can make money doing and those who don't genuinely enjoy trying, such as sports gambling and poker, and those that involve no skill at all, such as casino games or the lottery. Banning people from playing the skilled games for only hazy and hypocritical "moral" reasons is an embarrassment for a country like the US that considers itself so wise and a promoter of personal freedom.

It's all I could come up with in 30 seconds.

But regarding a lobby association, yes I thought of that a long time ago. I used to work for a pretty influential lobbying/govt relations company, that has since grown quite powerful. So I saw that whole world 2 inches in front of my face every day. It's pretty gross, especially when it comes to areas of life such as health care, things that really matter. That was the last job I had before I did this stuff full-time, and in fact, they were the ones who started telling me I should do this for a living, while I was being repeatedly demoted there for being a "communist". They did, however, promote me very quickly to head of the football and basketball pools, which was nice.

But yes, if we got a bunch of offshore books to kick in enough to pay lobbyists 10 or 20 grand a month or so, a presence could be established. With the WTO stuff, exceptions could be made for poker and sportsbooks. It wouldn't be a guaranteed win, but it would be worth a shot. I thought of this a long time ago, but there were too many NCAA hoops games I had to follow, and I just got caught up in that. Maybe we should do it now. I'll think about it.

I support it 100%.... of course this is when I am winning... and when I lose I hope they ban it!!! No seriously, if the US Govt allows a person to be able to sell/trade stocks there is no reason why I cant put $$$ on a sporting event.. Its all about the $$$$!!!!

The US government tries to protect it's citizens from their own human nature. That is why they try to outlaw gambling, drinking and other immoral acts. It is actually a good policy, I think it honestly feels good to come back to the United States after being in another sleezy country.

Perhaps the US gov't should ban unhealthy food as well. Why stop there? Why not let them control every aspect of our lives. :

Good to be young and innocent... Tsk, tsk, tsk... Do you really think the US government really cares about your well-being? Internet gambling is banned in the US because the US government isn't getting any piece of the pie.

I agree with Shuswapper, people are going to lose money gambling, not win. The US government knows that. You are right that they do not want others getting the money, they would rather have it and that is a good point. But, you do not see our government accepting millions of dollars in online casino wagers and sportsbook wagers, that is literally taking peoples money.

By "people" I presume you mean you, and not me.

That's OK, I've never really wanted to be identified with "people" anyway.

Supporting this bill is the first step to allowing government regulation of the offshore gambling industry. I suppose some of you might think this legislation is wonderful in that it could allow you to easily load up your online poker accounts again, but for those of you who want to genuinely make money I advise you to spend your energy positioning yourselves outside the control of the US government.

Beyond that, this is nothing more than pandering by Frank; not that poor legislation doesn't get passed regularly, but this bill has no chance in Congress. The majority of people in the US view gambling as too socially detrimental to be a "civil liberty" and therefore couldn't care less if their government is trying to prevent you from doing it. In most cases (typically the people who would support this bill) they're probably right.
