Default Just Got a Job To Be A Stock Broker...

So I went in for an interview last week was told to come back today for a 2nd one. I show up and within like 5 minutes told I have the job and will start on Monday. Now I'm pretty young and excited for this job because obviously I relate stocks and stock brokers with having the potential to make a lot of money, however the market right now sucks. My thinking is it can't really get any worse, we've seen the worst of it, and when things re gather and the market gets consistently better then I will be in a sick position.

The stock market and Sports betting are the exact same thing, so I'm also thinking that since I love gambling and sports betting that the transition to betting on companies instead of teams will now be my next vice to cling to. I'm definitely going to continue to sports gamble while at the start of this job, but I wonder when I get pretty involved into this and people start throwing me thousands of dollars, will I still gamble on sports? I'm hoping my idea, that the stock market and sports gambling are completely related, will now take away my need to waste my money on sports daily. I love to gamble sports, however if I can make the money where I just can lay bigger bets on a couple of games a week rather then sweat out consistent nights of betting 7-10 teams, I'll take that right now.

What do you guys think? Is this fools gold? or in 1-2 years will you guys see me making vids next to my new Mercedes?

...and btw I like the Bears +9 tonight.

You just don't become a Stock Broker the way you described. My Brother is the VP of a big financial firm in San Francisco and I remember when he became a Stock Broker. Lots of screenings and a very lengthy test is included because you are dealing with peoples financials. Two of my best friends are Brokers as well and the hiring process is more than what you just described. I drive a Mercedes, you need only half of a decent brain to earn a good living and drive whatever you want.

Yes, the test your talking about is called a Series 7. I take that in 6 months. I'm in the training stage now.

this was my exact thought.... anthony, you make this thread sounds like this is your first job as stock broker. But to be a stock broker, you need license and certificate?? no?? which company are you going to be working for??

I mean there is a training stage where I have to learn the ropes, then take the series 7, and then I'm able to close deals. I've just started the process to be a stock broker.

I don't believe you because you just sound stupid.

For the record when they give you a chunk of change if your fairy tale is true you can't trade stocks on the side. Thats illegal by the SEC for obvious reasons.

Two if your in it for the fame and attention of moving a lot of money you've already lost.

Good luck and I hope you like what you do.

Well actually the reason they are hiring is because people in the stock field couldn't hold there job because the market was so bad. It was as easy as I'm describing in how I got this job.

I don't have time to go into details right now, but I can tell you with 100% certainty that you can make a better return gambling on sports than you can in the stock market. Not even close.

Like the Bears tonight. Farve, this late in the season gets beaten down and is not as effective. I'll take all those points with the Bears, on MNF, at home.

Good luck day traded for years... I enjoyed shorting stocks...got hit for almost 20 G's in the 2001 tech bubble(going long)...knew a guy that lost an inheritance worth over 100 G's...market can be euphoric or a nightmare...have experienced both... Made 3000 in a minute once(shorting)bad earnings...so get ready for a roller coaster...also depends on what you are trading... stocks like walgreens never move others never stop moving GL ...

Stealing from grandmas and grandpas.

Used to work at a brokerage. Had all the 'future brokers' in small cubicles in the middle of the office, most of whom didn't make it. Be prepared to lie constantly and get your spiel down flawlessly. The less integrity you have, the better.

Stock gambling and sports gambling seem to go hand in hand? Sports side gives you quick high or low! Weird in society that stock people seem to be regarded with esteem while gamblers are frowned on?

Plenty of firms will hire anyone to be a stock broker. You job is to sign up new accounts. You have a quota to meet, and if you dont you are let go. I hope you know people with money or can charm the pants off people.

If you start a company which bets on businesses and lose a 100 billion, you get bailed out by the government, smartest gamblers in the world are istock brokers, if they lose they make a fortune, if they win they make a fortune

They lose a 100 billion in a year gambling, get bailed out by the taxpayer to keep gambling and bitch that they aren't getting the million dollar christmas bonuses they were promied when they just lost hundreds of billions

Good luck Anthony, make your $$$$

I lost my ass yesterday sports gambling and just got an empty wallet to show for it, meanwhile stock brokers lost half of everyones life savings and just deposited their 100k christmas bonuses

Think about it if there were a mathematic science to predict the stock market they would obviously program it into computers (since it would be worth a fortune to do so) and they would never lose, its pure fukin gambling

Most firms won't hire just "anyone" to be a broker.

But you're right, any broker has to build a book of business (at least $10M) that he can turn over 25% of every year. Frankly, it would be better for these investors if they just bought and held certain equities, but that is not in the broker's best interest. He has to open accounts, place their money into loaded funds or equities, and then churn those investments the next year for additional commissions.

Many people on this thread are confusing brokerage with investment banking. Brokers are salesmen, nothing more, nothing less.

Its all about who you know in the beginning. You have to start with a good nucleus of family and friends of family with money. That was the worst part for me when I started. You have to put those close to you in an awkward position to trust you ( having just entered the field) to invest the money they worked their whole life to earn.

I agree, I had about 5 friends take a broker job after college. 5 years later only 1 is still active. He was fortunate that his dad was a VP of some fortune 500 company. So he was able to tap his fathers connections. He has done well for himself, plays golf 3 or 4 times a week with clients. Basically he tries and keeps the clients happy, so they keep there money with his firm.
