    Default Imus/Rutgers story

Does anyone care? Why the hell has this been one of the lead stories on Sportscenter and other shows the past few days? The baseball season just started, basketball regular season is winding down, and the NHL playoffs are coming and I keep hearing about this crap. Enough already.

The guy was wrong, but honestly I don't it should have been a story to lead off sportscenter with.

Really a non-issue for me. I mean, baseball is starting, the NHL playoffs are starting, the Champions League is coming down to it, and the NBA playoffs are about to start. So what three stories do I hear in the first 10 minutes of SC? Duke lacrosse, Rutgers girls basketball, and two random football players suspended. Who cares?

there has got to be a guy who banged the rutgers hoops team and can come to mr Imus' defense

Yeah baseball just started... I think I have been able to watch 2 games that aren't hometown games. Direct TV ****ed the cable public.

Oh and actually on topic; he's a "Shock Jock" what do you think is going to do not say something shocking every now and again?

Suprisingly well-calculated free advertising for Mr. Imus, whose career was in the dumpster before this non-event. Imus is an old hack who nobody cares about, it is unbelievable the media has jumped on this. Most people are probably wondering who Don Imus is.

Someone else said it, but if comments like those of Imus are symbolic of the lowest form of racism today, we've come a long way in 100 years. Jesse Jackson & Al Sharpton ought to have bigger issues to address than a couple stupid off-color jokes from Don Imus. Let Imus fade away and never be heard again.

    I feel badly for him.

If I recall he was comparing Ten. and Rutgers.

He called Rutgers " Nappiheaded Hoes" and the Tenn. girls he called " Pretty"

When you compare the 2 squads I see where he is coming from.
I guess he could have chosen better words to describe Rutgers, but he didn't.

People are overreacting on this one. Give the guy a break.
Imus does tons for the community and is not a racist.

He apologized, people need to get over it

    Until the next one.

What I don't get is nobody seemed to care too much about what Don Imus has said in the past, and he's certainly spewed 'controversial' statements on other subjects. So why care now?

Now CBS, NBC, ESPN, et al, are covering this story a thousand fold more than they covered the actual game between Rutgers and Tennessee.

Well you do not go after Black Women that just played in the national spotlight in a huge media market.

    This is far from over

It was sexist and directed toward amateur athletes, some of whom may be underage. Big no-no. Not to mention parents are still involved at this level. I think he will lose his job. I agree about ESPN too. Leave the discussion stuff off the sports highlight shows.

So it would be ok if it was a small media market?

Would it be that much different if it was directed at WNBA players?

I can't believe anyone is defending this guy. WTF, these girls are private citizens who happen to be African-American, 18-22 years old, play women's basketball.....what right does he have to attack them.

I am surprised of all the dumb ****s on the gaming forum who are defending IMUS as being somehow the victim in all this. He deserves this and much much more.....Guess what, if he attacked your daughter, sister, wife, etc...you would not tolerate it. I hope they can this fool.

All offenses are worse against kids or minors.

I think the backlash from society will be worse because they were amateur athletes that didn't sign-up for the spotlight. And, schools need to protect their students. Indefensible regardless, but the target might be the difference between suspension and eventually getting the boot.

I attend Rutgers in New Brunswick, so I might be able to give you guys a little different angle on the Imus thing. To be honest, there isn't much talk about it amongst the students - RU New Bruns is 7% black, as opposed to the other campuses which have a higher percentage. It's funny, because a LOT of RU kids listen to WFAN in new york and imus's program - some kids that go to school here don't really find the comments he made all that disturbing, as it was more of a joke / personal attack made against the players and not the school itself. Me personally, I think he should be suspended for more than 2 weeks, that seems a little too lenient to me...but rutgers students are a bit apathetic to the whole thing.

and in response to Dead Money's comments...if you don't think he's racist, you need to get your head checked. the guy has a history of saying inappropriate things regarding race and racial issues on his show...most of them are done in a joking way which i dont really mind/care about, but yea...

I'm not defending the guy at all, if that's what you meant, Buddy Bear. Just not sure why this is as big a deal, why everyone is getting up in arms about it and, in the process, playing right into the hands of both Imus and the media.

How many times has Imus' name come up on this forum in the last year or so...none that I know of. If Imus has that much power that his comments are so crucial to this society, why is it nobody's been up in arms about the rest of the stuff he's said? Every damn article that's been written or commentary that's been spoken has put his offensive words in their lead and on the tips of the tongues of millions of people who never even knew this guy existed before. Calling any woman - - be they of legal age or not, be they students or working women - - what Imus did is wrong, period, and shows an enormous amount of ignorance and lack of class.

But it's also strange to me that the media and the public are spending way more time talking about what this guy said about the Rutgers team than what was spent even acknowledging them being in the championship game.

This guy won't be fired, not now, not with the media firestorm this has created. His ratings will shoot up and I wouldn't be surprised if he gets a freakin' raise.

JJ this is as accurate as my spelling... This is a classic case of media labeling (telling you what to think)... How the f*ck can this be racism..? He never used the term black, ******, negro, or any term related to their color... Nappy headed hoes must be ugly niggers then right..? How does nappy headed mean black and I believe there are white girls on Rutgers team... Secondly until they shut Barkley's fat as* up I don't want to hear anything about racial sh*t becaus he at times makes Imus look tame... He is one stupid nappy headed hoe (meaning ****** I guess) and I remember when they had to explain to him the differance between "YOUR" and "YOU'RE"...

Lastly I think people white or any other are much more greedy then they could be racist... In other words an NBA owner may be racists but he is greedy first... He'll take a team full of Jordan's if that will bring in the cash so basically if you can't cut it then you are simply not good enough period... A racist will have MJ on his team as quick as he will f*ck Janet Jackson..why... because they are that good...

What I actually found funny was that one of the Rutgers players said that she was emotionally scared for life over Imus's comments.

I'm sorry but every member of this forum knows thats probably not the case at all. Who here hasn't been called a some bad names during there lifetime and wasn't emotionally scared for life because of them.

I wonder how much of a recruiting tool this might have been for the Rutgers recruiting though. They actually did get plenty of exposure over this extremely bad incident.

Imus is a complete idiot. He was before this statement and he will continue to be an idiot after.

Having said that, Jackson and Sharpton have been bigger idiots for their entire life and have never been "fired".

Steven A Smith is on SportsCenter talking about Imus and his Rutgers comment... He said it is crossing the line and racially inflamatory... I do agree it was crossing the line but can anyone tell me how nappy headed hoes refers to anything racial..?

I asked several friends and all they can say is ..."well ya know it is... it just is"... How does that cut it as an answer and why does this not apply to blacks on tv such as Charles ?

I think he was out of line but should not have gotten fired...

Oh well, just goes to show that John Prine was right: It's a big ol' goofy world.
