Ivan Nova Might Have Tommy John Too

Ivan Nova's elbow MRI will be sent to Dr. James Andrews.

Nova wants to get a second opinion before deciding whether to undergo season-ending Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery. Yankees doctors recommended the procedure after examining him Tuesday in New York, and it's a near certainty that he'll be out until 2015.

I don't know about other seasons, but this has to be the most TJ surgeries for a season. It feels like every week somebody is getting it. Nova will most likely be having it soon and the Brewers Minor Leaguer Helwig also is getting surgery. It has been crazy. It's really a shame too.

Is MLB looking into this? I know that guys get stronger and they have to work harder throw harder but there is going to be no good pitchers, I will be taking lots of overs

Or maybe more teams are ENCOURAGING Tommy John at the first possible sign after seeing so many guys come back better than they were before the surgery?

I heard some theories on radio about the rash of these. #1 was overthrowing. #2 was weight training. Theory being the larger muscles were putting more strain on surrounding ligaments & tendons which are always the same size.

I think there's something to the weight issue. That was never a big part of training prior to the last 20 years or so for pitchers. And there were not a ton of TJ cases before weight training became in vogue. John Smoltz has good thoughts on this stuff. Google him.

I didn't really get why Harvey thought that picture would go over well.
