    5 rebounds?????

this guy will never be like Russell

he may become a servicable or decent center, but let's just subtract the "Bill Russell" comparison's now

when Bill Russell was 21 and 22 he averaged 15 points and 20 rebounds a game (and only 3 fouls) Oden's big problem....

    how old is Oden now?

ODEN will be 22 this coming January .
95 % of college students that graduate from college, like Russell, are at least 22 years old .
So,I we would have to assume Russell was at least 22 when he sighed for Pro basketball, right ?
And Oden has been plagued by injuries for 3 years,so let's give him some time .
This year is more or less like his rookie year .
Also,I had to change my mind on comparing him to Bill Russell,he's simply carrying too much bulk .
I never realized he weighs about 280/290 lbs .
I said about a month ago he may be more of a Shaq/Russell combo ?
And that is what it seems so far this season.

We will be able to judge Oden in the next 2 full seasons. He has potential but needs a few full seasons under his belt.

  9. #9

in shaquille was 21 he averaged 29.2 pts and 13.2 points a game....

its not an age thing... you don't get THAT much better if you don't have to begin with.... most great players in the NBA are and were great when they entered the league, whether they were 18 or 23

If Oden ever averages half of what Russell did in rebounding for his career, or 70% of what shaq did in his.... He'll be decent

but let's just stop the comparisons and expecting the guy to become a whole different guy due to 1,2, or 3 more years of maturation...

what you see is what you get

Here is exactly what "it" is Chi...a combination of injuries and maturity .
He hasn't fully matured into that large body yet,and he certainly has has a couple serious injuries, which are probably responsible for those two problems .
Shaq and Russell were both very mature individuals when they came into the pros .
You can tell that by their fist two seasons .

heck, I mean even Dwight Howard when he was a skinny 18 year old kid averaged a double double his first year... and he still hasn't even "matured into his body"..... If I understand what the heck that phrase really means

Cannot see where you are coming from ?
He has had TWO serious surgeries ,one on his broken wrist, and one on his knee, which was so serious the doctor said it probably take a year or two to heal properly .
Have you checked into this man's past history ?
He has been nothing but a winner all through High School and his one year in college.
You need to open up those closed eyelids Chi .

I see excuses, but no reasons why he is gonna be a hall of fame nba center...

  17. #17

I see him being more of a defensive threat - racking up big rebounds and blocks. Might not break 20 pts/game.

    One last post tonight !
He will "probably" be a hall of fame player "when" he has fully recovered and matured .
It might be 2/3 years ,and he still will only be 24/25 tears old .
Here is the reason he will be great...he is a winner and "his" teams have ALWAYS won .
Have you noticed how his team is playing now ?
Now go to bed Chi,and put that bottle of denial brew away !

I mean how many high school teams with 7 footers LOSE? besides they all transfer to good programs anyways...

Hell Mike Conley Jr, was just as much a reason for OSU's success in 06... is he a hall of famer too?

Pedestrian stats from a back up quality center. I like the guy, but I'm not sure what you see in him to suggest star qualities.

I liked watching him against the Warriors the other evening. He didn't face any quality defenders nor anyone of comparable size, but he did a good job at backing guys down and exploiting his positioning. Haven't seen him step up against quality competition yet though...
