    Default A Football Question

Today in the Bama game, the Mocs QB was back in the shotgun. Snapper snapped the ball, a defender pushed him (the center) down and turned to another lineman to block. A penalty was called for Roughing the Snapper. I have never heard of that call before. What is it?

well in pee wee league ya cant line up over the center..
maybe they adapted pee wee rules since they were playing a pee wee team

On long snaps you can't make initial contact to the center. This is to prevet injury due to his vulnerable position.

It wasn't a punt. Just the QB in shotgun formation.

I believe this to be the actual rule:

When a team is in scrimmage kick formation, a defensive player may not initiate contact with the snapper until one second has elapsed after the snap* (A.R. 9-1-2-XVIII-XX)."

I believe the situation Nina is speaking of was a punt. I saw it on ESPN360. Still IMO it was a chicken-shitt call.

It wasn't a punt. The QB took the snap. I had just never heard that one called before.

Never heard of 'roughing the snapper' Nina. I can only relate it to an unnecessary roughness penalty.
Were whistles blown to end the play or did it continue?

I didn't see the game Nina, maybe it was hands to the face and the refs didn't explain it correctly.

Maybe it was a 3rd and long play But the rule is to protect the Long-Snapper when his head is down. Again tho , I did NOT see any unnecessary roughing

The game was shown regionally so I ddin't think many of you had seen it. From the replay it looked like the defender shoved the center down, pushing about chest high. Then he turned to his left and picked up a blocker there. The play continued with an incomplete pass, I think. Which didn't matter since it was an automatic first down. Not that it mattered all at realistically. Like I said, I had just never heard that one called before.

ps...I love Mark Ingram. 102 yards, 2 TDs in 1.5 quarter of play

It was the correct call. Any team who wants to compete for a national championship should not schedule games from lower leagues.

Pavy.........while I don't like playing D-2 schools they are filler games and believe it or not are vital to the athletic programs at those smaller schools.

If I remember correctly, if the centers head is down you can not hit him until he raises up. You don't see this more often because any decent d-tackle will swim him or the guard in the A gap and blow up the play.

was the play blown dead? I don't understand what you mean by this...

Snapper snapped the ball, a defender pushed him (the center) down and turned to another lineman to block.
