I am doing some tracking rght now on opening/closing lines and on http://www.sbrodds.com/, you can go to the archives taba d look since Oct 31 '06 to present on the opening/closing line for each game.

Iin the archive section Sac/Miami shows Miami opened -3.5/closed -4.5...if on the sbrline beta page, you go to scoreboard...it says Miami -4/-4.5....

My question is on the archives tab whose opener is being used?

I know on the scoreboard, you can select the book for the opener..but am curious who the default book is for the opener under the archives section.

I'm a bit unsure about where you've found this "archives" tab. Nonetheless, on http://www.sbrodds.com/, openers and closers will be displayed for whichever book you set as the "Default Opener" in the settings interface (click the "S" at top right of the Lines Viewer page).

SBRforum.com has some odds and scores features as well ... I believe that Bookmaker.com is being used there for openers/closers, but Bill or Ivan would have to give the definitive answer on that site.

SBR Odds needs to be upgraded

As mentioned previously, SBR Odds is currently being upgraded and redesigned. Within a couple of weeks, SBR will launch a faster, more stable, feature-rich lines service. A few things to look for include injury reporting, lines from many more books, corresponding vegas odds, betting/handicapping tools, improved scoreboard features, etc. As always, the price will be very competitive ... Ah ... I see. Well, the "archives" tab is really a link to archived articles on SBRforum.com. You can navigate to "Odds & Scores" for each individual league from anywhere within SBRforum.com (maybe its a bit confusing right now as we're temporarily using an SBRforum.com page as the entry into SBR Odds ... that will be changing ASAP).

As for openers and closers on the pages you are looking at, those are from BookMaker/BetCRIS. On the current SBR Odds application, openers and closers are displayed for whichever book you set as "Default Openers" as described above. That may be the reason for the discrepancy you've noticed.

This is probably a good question for discussion. Depending on the league, my lean would be towards Pinnacle's number. However, there are much sharper guys on this forum than me ... anyone have input?

To properly responds to your query I'd have to first ask for what purpose you need the opening line.

I don't think that there's really anything particularly "special" about the concept of an opener. The opener is just whatever line hits the tape first, be it Pinnacle, CRIS, The Greek, or the Hilton. If all lines are released at roughly the same time ... I'd say either selecting randomly or using the arithmetic mean should probably be sufficient for most purposes of which I can think. But once again, your own requirements for the "opening line" would best dictate its appropriate formulation.

I understand you're looking to study opening lines, but what I'm trying to get from you is how you're planning to consider them. The point I'm making is that the concept of a "real opener" in one lacking in gravitas. The opening line, broadly defined is the earliest line to be fairly broadly released to the public. The only issue with this definition exists when multiple (different) lines from multiple books are released nearly simultaneously. The decision of which line to use (or whether to use a function of the multiple openers such as the mean or median) is such an instance is probably quite arbitrary and should be defined by the nature of the study.

But for the sake of simplicity how about this ... just pick the earlier number. If two lines are released simultaneously either use the averaged or a number you feel representative the address. (For instance in CRIS opens at -3 -110 and 16 seconds later Pinnacle opens at -3½ -105, then at 4.545% hold might decide to use either -3 -124 / +3 +102 or -3½ +101 / +3 -122.)
