The offensive coordinator made the call and was fired the next day. He never coached again. His name was Bob Gibson.

That must have been before the kneel down was a no brainer like it is today. But even with the poor play call, Pisarcik just looks like he's trying to fumble and then NOT recover.

The worst call ever was 2008 when the eagles (here we go again) played the bengals. The eagles faced a 4th and 1 from their own 49 yards line with about 1:57 to go in the game. The game was 13 13..... By going for it they would have doubled their chances of winning as they should convert that about 72% of the time..... a couple more yards and they were in FG range. Games are won and lost on the big decisions and Belichick made the big decision which was the right one. MInd you both teams played that game NOT to win.

Your dealing with gamblers who base "good" decisions on whether they win or lose. It's hard for people to say they made the right move when they lost. He played to win the game.... and didn't give a f*ck about the over/under spread 2nd half line anything.....

the people who say it was a bad or stupid call are probably the ones who lost money.

Anyway, the most successful people in most disciplines tend to be the ones who aren't afraid to take calculated risks. Kudos to Belichick

Never thought I'd ever accuse a 4 legged animal of sentient thought, but I have to agree with the goat. I might add that not only does the opponent have the ball on the 30, but the opponent has been very successfully moving the ball downfield very quickly all game. If you're gonna give them the ball, do it as far away as possible. Absolutely horrible call by Belichik.

Bob Gibson is a former American football coach who coached for the New York Giants in the National Football Leagueoffensive coordinator who called the play that resulted in "The Miracle at the Meadowlands" in 1978. Playing their archrival the Philadelphia Eagles the Giants were leading 17–12 and had possession of the ball with only 30 seconds left.[1] They had only to kneel the ball to end the game, as the Eagles had no timeouts.[1] Gibson ordered Giants quarterback Joe Pisarcik to run play "pro 65 up", which called for Pisarcik to hand the ball off to fullback Larry Csonka. The handoff was botched and Eagles cornerback Herman Edwards picked up the loose ball and ran in for the game-winning score.[1] (NFL). Gibson was the
Gibson's reasoning was governed by what happened a play earlier. Pisarcik had taken a knee, only to be knocked over when the Eagles' Bill Bergey charged into Giants' center Jim Clack. This violated an unwritten rule that defensive players do not rush in a situation when the quarterback kneels down. Gibson didn't want to risk getting Pisarcik injured or expose his players to penalties or fines for fighting. However, he didn't explain this to the players, and it came across as a power trip. Head coach John McVay's headphones weren't working, and he later said that he would have overruled Gibson had he known what was happening.
Gibson was fired the next morning due to the furor over the call and never worked in football again.

The theory that this was "mathematically" the correct decision is laughable.

Exactly.

Let's say it was 4th & 2..... losing 17-16 with 30 sec left. you can either go for it on 4th down or kick a 54yd FG to win it, which would you do? Well, according to mathemetical probability you should go for it because you have a higher probability of converting the 4th down than nailing a 54yd FG. But it wouldnt be the correct decision because if u fail, you cost ur team a chance to win the game.

Heck, according to math, you should never punt at all. Just go for it on every 4th down. Forget the risk/reward.
