The same reason USC was 9th in the BCS and Oregon 13th after the Ducks knocked them out of Autzen Stadium and sent them packing to University of South Central. Media loves them (like they do LSU), the books love them and so do the coaches. Bad mistake. Cheers to everyone who had Stanford.
