I never understood the difference between greatest captain and greatest player. Lemieux and Gretzky were captains, won Cups, and were better players. What makes Yzerman so much better?
Not to take anything away from Yzerman, as he was a great player, and probably got more out of his talent than anyone in hockey history.

Ehh its a toss-up, but I gotta go Dustin Brown.
That was a joke of course, I don't know shit about the history of hockey, but looking at the first two mins of that video, Yzerman was one helluva player.

Joe Sakic is a great worthy choice but Jason Smith? who the **** is he to be on that list? Brind'Amour and Iginla? Please.

Jason Smith, captain on every team (Flyers made him captain after acquiring him, think about that), not as offensive as the others on this list, but the guy is pure leadership with sacrifice of the body on the ice.
Brind'Amour, look up 2006.
Iginla, this is your quintessential captain. Offensively and defensively sound, hits and fights, giving up the body for the sake of the team.
Yzerman was surrounded by great talent during his captaincy. Offensively he was solid, but he wasn't any more important than a handful of other guys on that team. Has Yzerman ever blocked a shot? Think of Calgary without Iginla, or Yzerman as captain. Doesn't work.

Drafted in 83 into a "Dead Wings" franchise, turning that franchise from what it was the to what it is now. Always showing class in everything he does. Anyone that knows anything about hockey will agree he is one of the greatest captains of all time. Iginla is a great player, not even close to comparing him to Mario or Stevey...yet.

What are you talking about? He wasn't the GM, just a player. That organization is all class and made great moves, but I honestly don't know how you consider Yzerman an on-ice leader. Doesn't hit, doesn't block shots, doesn't fight. Getting points on the monster lines he played on with other Hall Of Famers isn't enough.

All worthy.
I think Messier was the true Capt. while Gretzky still wore the C. in Edmonton.
Clarke is up there for sure. All heart and a great leader on the ice(ass off the ice)
Stevie Y and Sakic great leaders.

I like it when a captain can elevate the play of those around him, and change the momentum with a fight if needed. Marc Messier fits that description well.
