Default OT - A few random thoughts on the Oscars

Ellen Degeneres. In general I don't mind her and I thought she was an okay choice to host. I have seen her do stand-up and she can make me laugh at times. I dunno though - she just didn't work for me last night. Something about the Oscars seems to bring out weak performances from hosts. I love Jon Stewart but I was borderline embarrassed for him last year. I thought Ellen did a little better than that but was far from strong.

Good to see Scorcese win Best Director. Although I had no wager on it, I let out a, "YEAH!" when his name was called.

Alan Arkin wins Best Supporting Actor Oscar? Really? Don't get me wrong, I have liked the guy going back to Catch-22 but . . . did the voters see any of the other movies? Arkin would have been my 5th choice on that list.

And why even nominate the little girl from Little Miss Sunshine? I mean she's cute and everything but, come on.

Pleasing to me: Babel didn't win Best Picture. No sir, I didn't care for that movie.

The same question always occurs to me when I watch The Oscars: where exactly do I see these Animated Short Subjects and Live Action Short Films? I always see things in those categories that make me curious but I don't have a clue where to follow up.

And the big question: I was checking out 61 year-old Best Actress winner Helen Mirren and I was thinking, By gawd, I would do her.

Would you?
