I'm a Pirate fan, but the last thing baseball wants is a Kansas City -Arizona World Series. There should be a salary floor, where teams must spend a certain amount of money.

Then we should have like 6 teams in the league then

It is bullshit that they have a payroll over 200 million. There should be a cap of 120 million and teams can still have a payroll of 50 million if they choose to.

I agree with the salary floor in some respects....

because teams like the Pirates can have ownerships that don't CARE one bit, if they ever win again, as long as they are making 20 million a year off the team.... plus having the value of the franchise increase from when they bought it.

"small market" is an excuse to try NOT to compete

and its unfair to the fans and MLB as a whole

There needs to be a floor and a cap.

These small market teams are still bringing in millions from the luxury tax.

Yea and they are the only team the luxury tax applies too

having a cap would just be mindboggling and not fair.

and what do you want them to do with the rest of the money??

What we need is a Champions League type of a league for baseball. Put in the Champions League teams with payrolls over 150 million (Yankees, Redsox, Phillies, Cubs, Cardinals, Dodgers etc) and a lower league for the rest of the teams. Then we can have two champions every year. One for the high payroll teams and one for the low payroll teams.

Shorter season and cut about 6 teams then it would be fun again.

About a salary cap , NO WAY! How much do NYY pay MLB for going over the 'cap' these days?

Most world series winners do not have high payrolls. A shorter season is needed.

Let the New Yawkas have their Yankees. If it weren't for the Yankees, why would anyone want to live in New Yawk City? All of those assholes would come over here.

I prefer the first rule to be NO MONEY can be involved in any trades. Then you wouldn't have dumbasses like Tom Hicks signing A-Rod to that big deal and end up paying him to play for the Yankees when Hicks pulled his head outta' his ass and realized he couldn't afford it.

By the way, why is it that when the Yankees had the highest payroll from 2001 to 2008, they weren't able to buy the World Series titles in those years?

Because baseball in unpredictable especially in the playoffs. And for the most part they weren't buying elite players, they were buying good ones who they thought were elite.

And they did make the playoffs every year except for one. So the buying of players guaranteed them a playoff spot. Which still isn't fair.

Yes, there should be a salary cap and a floor like every other major sports league. Although it will never happen because baseball is so poorly run at the top, Bud Selig has no influence. The players association is too strong, unfortunately.

At some point this will come and backfire on MLB. No league will be taken seriously by the fans when one team has 10X the payroll of many of the smaller teams. People don't want to pay money to see the big guy beat up the small guy. This is why college sports are more fan to watch.

It's pretty simple boys and girls: If it's just the mean old rich Yankees that are the problem, then why don't the other 29 owners simply stand up and demand change?

This "Yankees bought another World Series" whining has been gotten old over the past 80-odd years.

more accountibility is needed from "small-market" owners to open their books and have it reported to the fan base. You have crooks that own the teams that never ever will try to field a truly competitive team and MLB is one sport where the only quick way to become a winner is by buying free agents, and/or trading all your prospects for some proven commidities.

the other way takes about 4-6 years of drafting and developing talent. and this takes $ too and is a crapshoot.

MLB due to its learned skills > raw talent is truly different from leagues like the NBA and NFL where guys can come right in at 18,19 or 21 year old nfl rookies and help change the course of a franchise.

so all that needs to be considered when figuring out any equitable rules that would level the playing field

Yankees at least paid for the right high price free agents this year and it paid off. They make a shit load of money from the Yes Network where no team comes close to making that much money. Should be a salary cap but it will never happen. Also needs to be a rule that shit teams can't dump their good players in the middle of the season like the Pirates and Indians.

I never understood why "small market" owners are the bad guys. Do you really think that the Yankees make no money at all? I always hear the arguement that the Yankees put their money back into their product, well they do. But do we rally don't know what percentage of revenue goes back into their product? As a hypothetical example, it is possible for the Yankees to make 500 million a year as an organization, and put 450 million back in. While the Twins make 100 million as an organization but put 90 million back in. In this scenario, who really puts "more money back into their product." Also, given this scenario, who would blame any owner for trying to make some money?

Why is it always assumed that the Yankees make 500 million and spend 500 million, while the Pirates make 100 million and spend 50 million?

Someone please explain this to me.
