Default Celtics' DJ dead at 52

ESPN reporting he collapsed during D-league practice. Very sad.

I heard that just now when I walked in the door, and turned on ESPNnews at the bottom of the hour report.

He's was only 52 years old too.

    RIP

Those mid-80s Celtic teams could not have done what they did without him. At their peak they were breathtaking. After an imperfect start in Seattle, what a marvelous team basketball player he turned out to be.

    Tragic.

charles barkley kind of has a running joke of saying celtics that are alive are spinning in their graves at the current state of the celtics and then ernie checks him on it saying so and so is still alive

barkley just last week said DJ was spinning in his grave at the way the celtics were playing

and then of course a few days later DJ is dead

I thought anyone from the great Celtics-Lakers rivalry of the eighties was pretty much immortal.

DJ's death is far too early. RIP.

It's a real shame, he was too young.

One my favorites from that era. Not a great talent but still a great player. He was money with that 17ft jumper with the game on the line.

He always looked like a kid. Im pretty much shocked by his passing.

Absolutely crushed by this news. Just 52 years old. DJ was a money player his entire career. He could hit big shots down the stretch and was a clutch foul shooter as well. Not to mention a great defender and ball handler.

I recall he had some personal problems after leaving the game in 1989. I recall some incident with his wife where he held her at knifepoint? Anyone remember that?

I think that really hurt his coaching chances, although he did get the interim stop with the Clippers (8-16), but that doesn't really count.

I thought DJ would be an assistant in the league for many years. Surprised he wasn't on anyone's staff.

Here's something worth reading about DJ by Bill Simmons:

Went into cardiac arrest outside the practice facility for the team he was coaching. He was not playing or exercising at the time.
