Default Will Las Vegas get an NBA franchise ?

As the NBA commissioner put it in an interview with The Times: "If they'll take the NBA off the board" — that is, eliminate betting on league games — "we could consider Las Vegas for an NBA franchise."

I think so too.....i can't believe Vegas caved in not allowing betting for the All Star game. I mean i know it's not a big money maker but still the principle....

As far as I'm concerned we make Vegas the capitol of the free world. Who needs DC?

No way do they remove the NBA from the board. Vegas will not see a pro sports team. If anything, it would be a NHL team.

I think the only way they could make that marriage work is if they remove that LV team from the betting rotation out there.

I guess the bottom line is this... Does 82 games+ playoffs outweigh the revenue factor of an NBA team?

I think it's a no-brainer for the power brokers in LV.

Once they have an arena and a firmer wink and nod from Stern, then: games come down, team goes in.

I just don't get it. These days, there are so many places to bet, if you have inside information or want to throw a game or something (any plausible reason for making a bet), you could do that with a bookie or online. How is taking NBA off the Vegas board going to stop you?

It's all about public perception and public image. Outwardly they (NBA and NFL commissioners) want nothing to do with gambling, because it supposedly corrupts the game. But they know very well that the popularity of their leagues would drop dramatically if people could no longer bet on the games. And that popularity translates into lucrative contracts with television and advertisers. It's called hypocrisy, and America is full of it.

bigboydan, may be on to something. Just take the LV team off the board. Didn't the NBA do that with a team owned by a guy who also owned a hotel/casino in Vegas?

Bill is right, the Palms dont have the NBA on the board.

They could just do the LV team, but I think Stern wants all NBA off the board.

If you remember, it wasnt to long ago that you couldnt bet on UNLV games out here.

That rule was overturned due to the XFL team in LV.
