    Default OT: Private Messages Access

I've discussed this before with other people at other forums that use this same forum software, but does admin have access to everyone's PMs. Nothing to do with this site, just curious, as I'm becoming more and more convinced they are being read at another site.

with this version of the s/w so, i highly doubt it. the older versions of this s/w had holes in it though, so beware.

Don't worry, OWNED - the mods won't be able to see that jjgold offered to blow you off for $20.

I believe that vBulletin uses mySQL (or some mySQL derivative) as its database engine, storing all posts and PMs as (unencrypted) plain text. As such, anyone with read permission to the appropriate database tables would have full access to all onsite PMs. Going a step further, even if SBR had installed some sort of mySQL encryption plug-in, given that the board's been programmed in php, you could be certain that the webmaster (if he were so inclined) would have at least as much access to your own PMs as you.

So in short, if you have reason to suspect that Agent Smith might foil JJ's and your plans to break in to the Pinnacle Compound you might choose not to discuss your schemes over SBR PMs.

If vBulletin is installed, the database is owned by the userID. Why would the admin allow anyone to have read access to the database or tables?

forum database doesn't need anyone to have read access other than the userID of the forum and the admin.

PS. I think this software here is run on Windows 2000 and using MS Framework

    Owned.

Private messages can be read. But I don't think Moderators have access to it.

as far as sbrforum, we use vBulletin and it is run on MySQL. Admins and Mods do not have site access to anyones private messages.

Of course a few key employees in our IT department has access to the database but I cant get them to read the forum as it is, so I can guarantee all private messaging on sbrforum is safe.

    Hint hint agent smith.

Thanks, my PMs here have been nothing more than simple chatting with a few posters I respect. I sent somebody else a PM in another forum, then saw what I wrote reposted in a different forum by one of the moderators at the first forum. Thanks again for the help everybody.
