TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – He wasn’t even the most ballyhooed member of Alabama’s celebrated freshman class a year ago.

But early on, Alabama’s Nick Saban knew what he had in Mark Ingram.

I remember asking Saban last August about freshmen who had caught his attention during the first part of preseason camp.

One of the first names out of his mouth was Ingram. I was surprised at the time. The only surprise now is how Ingram hasn’t been a hotter commodity in the Heisman Trophy race.

That’s about to change.

South Carolina's defense is a solid one. The last time I watched TN play was the TN/Auburn game. TN players were gassed before half time and already cramping up. It was not hot or humid. Is that not a clear sign of a poorly conditioned team?

Ingram breaks free in race for Heisman : Mark Ingram is close to becoming Alabama's first Heisman winner.

Alabama running back Mark Ingram is on a roll.

He has rushed for 950 yards in the past six games and has emerged as the unquestioned leader in the Heisman race. Two-time Heisman recipient Archie Griffin acknowledged Ingram as the leader, and a Web site has been established to tout Ingram’s Heisman credentials.

But Ingram, who is trying to remain low key, refuses to strike a Heisman pose. Plenty of Alabama students are quick to do it for him.

That's a different question. The heisman is suppose to be for the most outstanding player not the most valuable player.

Mark Ingram for Heisman?

Ben Tate doesn’t think so.

But Tate doesn’t even think Ingram — the standout running back for No. 2 Alabama — is the best college running back in the state.

Guess who he thinks is better.

“I know I’m the best back in the state,” Tate told the Augusta (Ga.) Chronicle last week. “I bet if you went and broke down film and asked teams in the SEC who is the best back in the state, I mean, I feel like it’s me.”

Tate and Ingram will square off a week from Friday when Auburn (7-4, 3-4 in Southeastern Conference) hosts Alabama (10-0, 7-0). But until then, the debate over who’s the better back will continue.

While determining the best running back in any conference is subjective, looking at statistics can give some indication of which back is the best. And statistically speaking, Tate is good — but not as good as Ingram, in any category.

Ingram, a 5-foot-10, 212-pound sophomore out of Flint, Mich., leads the SEC in nearly every rushing category. He ranks first in rushing yards (1,297), rushing yards per game (129.7) and rushing touchdowns (10, tied with Tim Tebow). Only Mississippi’s Dexter McCluster ranks higher in yards per attempt at 7.06 to Ingram’s 6.69.

Tate, a 5-foot-11, 218-pound senior out of Newark, Md., ranks second in the SEC in rushing yards with 1,209, third in rushing yards per game with 109.91 and fourth — behind McCluster, Ingram and Vanderbilt’s Warren Norman — in yards per attempt among players with 100 carries or more, with 5.37.

Ingram has compiled his numbers in 10 games, while Tate has played 11.

“Don’t get me wrong, (Ingram is) a good running back,” Tate said. “He’s a very good running back. He’s only a sophomore and he’s having a great year. But at the same time, his team is winning. They’re undefeated, so of course he’s going to be talked about.”

Tate’s signature performance came Oct. 10 against Arkansas, when he ran for 184 yards and two touchdowns in Auburn’s 44-23 loss to the Razorbacks. His most recent game was a 67-yard performance against Georgia in a 31-24 loss.

Ingram’s best game was on. Oct. 17 against South Carolina, when he finished with 246 yards and one touchdown in the Crimson Tide’s 20-6 victory. In his most recent performance, Ingram rushed for 149 yards and two scores in Alabama’s win over Mississippi State.

Tate and Ingram have six 100-yard games each, with Ingram also rushing for 99 yards in Alabama’s victory over Tennessee.

But while their numbers have been somewhat comparable, Ingram has been the one mentioned in the running for the Heisman Trophy, which is awarded to the nation’s best player each season.

“Hopefully, he gets it,” Tate said. “I want to see a running back get it. It’s been a while since a guy at the position has been able to get it. Maybe, hopefully he will. More power to him.”

Last week, Tate was named a semifinalist for the Doak Walker Award, which honors the nation’s top running back. Ingram was also on the list.

Tate is Auburn’s fifth all-time leading rusher with 3,168 yards on 640 attempts. The top four are Bo Jackson (4,303), Carnell Williams (3,831), James Brooks (3,523) and Joe Cribbs (3,368). With strong games against Alabama and Auburn’s bowl opponent, Tate could finish his career fourth on the list.

Ingram’s career numbers are already strong, too. The sophomore has compiled 2,025 yards and 22 touchdowns — the same number as Tate — on 337 carries. His career average is 6.0 yards per carry.

“(Tate is) a guy that laid low at the beginning of the year and kept working on the things that he needed to do to become a better football player,” Auburn coach Gene Chizik said during his weekly press conference last Tuesday. “It’s just really good to see good things happen to him, because he just really deserves it. He’s put a lot of effort and everything into Auburn. He’s already graduated, which is as good as it gets. It’s just great to see good things happen to him, because he’s really produced for us.”
