Default Anyone More Important To His Sport Than Tiger Woods?

He is the whole show, when he does not play the tour is invisible, he is such an imposing figure that when he leaves golf is finished.

There was golf before Tiger Woods.

Steve Nash is changing the face of basketball. Many teams are now trying the copy the Phoenix style, and so far that is easier said than done. The ripple effect is there though. So if we're talking about one athlete's importance to a sport...

    I vote for Roger Federer

Look what this guy has accomplished over the past few years. This guy was 92-5 last year, and just steam rolled everyone (accept Nadal in a few matches)

I dont think we would hear about Golf if Tiger wasnt in the game. I didnt know he took time off, I just thought the tour was over with till now.

financially- Woods means more to golf than any other athlete has to their sport. His presence has increased the profile of golf beyond imagination. Ruth and Ali are right there- Jordan in the area.

Tennis often has one dominant guy. We used to have Sampras winning everything.

Individual sports are going to make one guy stand out much quicker than in a team sport. Ali may have been the greatest, but to me someone who changes the face of a team sport -to the point where the style is copied by other teams- is even greater. Even Pele wasn't able to do this. But Johan Cruyff was.

I think that all sports that has one dominant player that are so much better then everyone else just proves that it is too little competition, just like womens sports where Anja Parson dominate the skiing etc etc.

Look at soccer for instance. Soccer is the worlds biggest sport and even the worlds greatest player isnt that much better then number 2, if people even could agree to who is the best.
