Game Over: State Delivers Blow to Online Gambling

    Jan 24, 2007 01:58 PM

The game is now over for New Yorkers who like to gamble online.

While it has been illegal to do so in the state for some time, many people found ways around in the past, by placing bets with sites through off-shore companies.

But as NEWS10's Dori Marlin reports, a new law in effect this week essentially takes the sites off-line in New York.

The new law went into effect this past Monday at 9pm, making New York one of just 13 states no longer allowing companies to process bets that are placed online. What that means now:

    * While before, it was illegal to gamble online, but people still found a way to place bets...
    * Now, in the state, the sites literally will not let you log in and gamble

"I'd play free rolls every day just to kill time," says online gambler, Steve Douglas.

Many, like 24-year-old Steve Douglas of Albany, are upset with the change.

"Not everybody has the opportunity to go to Turning Stone, or even start a home game whenever they feel like it," Douglas says.

But experts say that is part of why the state wants to stop the sites in the first place - they are simply too accessible.

"We certainly know that people are engaged in various forms of online gambling," says UAlbany Associate Professor, Dr. Matthew Martens.

Dr. Martens specializes in counseling psychology, and explains why it is a problem.

"It's gonna' lower the prevalence of people getting involved in this type of gambling, simply because it's gonna' be harder for people to access the sites," Dr. Martens says.

However, many of the sites are trying to find a way around the law once again, to get regulars like Steve back in their stable.

What exactly do you think they're doing? I haven't tried that many different sites, but Pinnacle, Matchbook, CRIS and Cascade work just fine. I love that people think this might actually DO anything.

Interestingly, though, it still seems to be legal for the NY Post to feature betting lines for sports events. They even ran a "bettor's guide" to the NFL playoffs a few weeks ago, boasted about on the cover.

I'm in New York City, so you'd think if anyone got hit by this it would be me, but I didn't even notice. My recommendation is that you use one of the websites that people use to load up websites they're blocked from.

Article doesn't make a lot of sense. Was illegal before is illegal now. Ok . . . Some mention of how they were going to enforce different would at least explain the prediction they make of no more betting.

They're "blocking" these gaming sites? Is that what China does with porno sites?

Here is another proxy option, it says "SECURE GAMING TUNNEL DESIGNED WITH ONLINE GAMBLERS IN MIND"
    http://www.gamingtunnel.com/

    BUT

what happens when you try to withdraw from the book or neteller and they tell you that 200 other people have used the same ip?

Doesnt neteller block access to ur acct if another account uses the same ip to login?

    too many problems
    forget it

The NY Post has had the "bettors guide" long before internet betting. Its not illegal to include this.

Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana, Mich., Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, South Dakota, Washington, and Wisconsin are the ones I know of and seen listed elsewhere... I guess there are more on the list? Then again clearly the article is factual to begin with...
