I have never bet parlays in a serious thinking-it-was-a-smart-money-making-strategy way.
Sometimes on a Saturday during NCAAF or NCAAB, I'll parlay a handful of big ML favorites and put some small $$$ on them just as an added bit of entertainment.
But I'm sure I lose money on those in the long run.

Parlays are a huge advantage to a player that is good. They are horrible if you are bad or even 50/50. Say you hit 55% of your football bets.
ROI of betting straight at -110 = 5%
ROI of betting -105 = 7.38 %
3 teamer at 13-5 = 8.9%
3 teamer at 14-5 = 14.9%

I still don't bet parlays as I don't want to risk having a bad year and taking a beating except in baseball.
If you bet a baseball parlay at a book that you can get the best odds there is no disadvantage to betting the parlay compared to two straight bets.
Also if you get 7-1 for a 3 teamer you are getting true odds.

I can see players who have a small bankroll wanting to use parlays. But for players with large bankrolls, I don't see why they'd want to link 2 wagers together. The one exception of course being where the wagers are correlated, e.g. point spread and o/u

Open parlays might be a litte better odds than regular ones due to parlay not having top be filled at the time of the bet.

Here's the math playing a 2 teamer at 13/5 hitting 55%.
55^2/100^2= 3025/10000 = .3025
This means you will win 30.25 % of your parlays.
Over 100 bets you win 30.25 and lose 69.75.
ROI = 8.9 %

3 teamer at 6-1
55^3/100^3 = .1646
Over 100 games you
win 16.46
lose 83.54

At $110/game 3 teamer at 6-1 over 100 games.
win 16.6375 * 6 = 9982.50
lose 83.3625 * 1 = 8336.25
profit = 1646.25
