Default This referee power-trippin has to stop (LSU-Georgia)

These excessive celebration flags are ruining football...My God that TD catch by Georgia's #8 may turn out to be the highlight of his life...and the refs throw a 15-yarder for what??? Celebrating in a respectful manner w/ his teammates for 12 seconds??? bleeeecccchhhh

Terrible calls. The referees blew it twice in a span of two minutes. That's hard to do.

Cost Georgia the game. Though the formation penalty on the kick off didn't help.

Do they want the players to bow their heads, remain silent, and walk off the field?

Seems like a power trip by someone, and if it is just coming from the refs, they should get fired.

Three times really...how could that ref call LSU's game-clinching INT out-bounds??? He was standing right in front of it...he couldn't have a better view if he was standing in front of a 60-inch HD plasma at Best Buy...

The officiating was solid the entire game with the exception of the celebration calls. It was shades of BYU/Washington a year or two ago. And the call on AJ Green (#8) completely changed the game because it shifted the field. LSU wasn't able to pass a lick this game which they would have had to do and they would have never been running the ball in the first place. They tried to "make up" the call on LSU but it was too late. Do they want the kids to be stoic out there? No other games were called like that...why was this one different?

I've said it before and I'll say it again, the refs are ruining this great game.
This officiating was worse than the UGA/ Okie St game. another game that was decided by the refs.

From what I can gather by watching this BS is players should show no emotion and should not try and make a big hit ever or you will be penalized and it may cost you the game.
Congrats LSU backers and fans but I think the refs had to much say so in the outcome of this game

If I were football commissioner, I would make sure three rules get changed:

1. Excessive celebration -- get rid of it and change it to taunting. If a player taunts another player, the home crowd, or does anything like an obscene gesture, then flag 'em. Otherwise, let them have some fun.

2. No more timeouts to 'freeze' the kicker. Once the linemen are set, no defensive timeouts on kicks.

3. Add a two-minute warning to college, and get rid of the stopped clock on first down. The stoppage on first down makes better drama, but it is never enforced the same during games. If it is the visitors driving, a few more seconds tend to tick off or the clock starts early once spotted.

I've just two more comments about these shenanigans:

1) As soon as the LSU / Georgia game was over, I switched back to the ND / UW game just as ND scored that touchdown...there was 1:20 left on the game-clock...ND was just obnoxiously celebrating their score and I thought to myself "how in the hell is ND not getting a 15-yard penalty for this behavior while Georgia was basically crucified for far less?"

2)Then, on the next play, ND made the 2-point conversion and their celebrating was nothing less than obnoxious (compared to Georgia's #8), and I swear I saw a yellow flag thrown...(I'm not completely positive as I've been drunk as a skunk all day)...the only reason for a yellow-flag on that play could have been "excessive celebration / unsportsman-like conduct...yet the ref nonchalantly stuffs the flag in his pocket and announces to the crowd "there was no penalty on the play" and lo-and-behold Notre Dame goes on to win the game?????

Its obvious the officiating crew in the GA game was under instructions to enforce these BS penalties.
For what reasons is beyond me...
It wasnt only at the end of the game, I think in the 3rd Q Cox completed a 3rd down pass over the middle to Orson Charles for a 1st down inside LSUs 20. He was flagged for pumping his fist at the crowd.
WTF....

Have fun playing the game not being a classless jackass. I guess they shouldn't have flagged Georgia when the whole team ran on the field on the opening TD in the Florida game a few years back. I mean they were just having fun...

1.) A bullshit "taunting" flag cost ND the game at Michigan earlier the year
2.) There was a flag after the 2 point conversion, but it was a penalty on Washington and thus declined.

Well some celebrations are clearly over the top like that Georgia one you cited, but a player going "shh" to the crowd doesn't warrant a flag.

At the least, they should make it a 10 yard penalty.

There's a difference between celebrating and taunting. What I saw in the LSU/UGA game is something you will see in every game in America today that will go unflagged. That's the issue here. AJ Green has never been a taunter or primadonna. He was celebrating with his team mates and wasn't taunting the opposing team that I could tell. Unless there was something that went on down on the field that everyone in the stadium or booth didn't see I don't understand the flag.

Well Dane you are correct I didn't think that was a penalty at all but in my previous post I am referring to another unsportsmanlike from earlier in the game. With the spoon to mouth motion.

I agree Ralphie. The 'throat slit' was rightfully removed. Any other silly stuff that is 'acted out' like when they 'dig the grave' should be flagged too. Florida gets away with that chomp every game and that is just as much taunting as anything else.

and Charles pumping his fist to get the home crowd in it is also classless I guess

after AJ was flagged for celebration and LSU marched down and scored another flag for celebrating a TD.

I hate that...short of a team celebration, they should let the guys have some fun. There was a flag in a game earlier today where the guy flipped into the endzone and got flagged. Let them have some fun!

"To me, if you're losing a game and it's late in the game and it looks like all hope is lost and you get down the field and you score a touchdown, I think that probably was the right amout of celebration," Georgia coach Mark Richt said.
"I don't know if it was excessive for the moment. ... I didn't think we went too crazy."
But Richt acknowledged he didn't know exactly what transpired amid the pandemonium.
"I'm sad that it happened," he said.
The officiating crew said, in a statement provided by the SEC later Saturday night, that "following a brief team celebration, Green made a gesture to the crowd calling attention to himself," thus drawing the flag.

"I definitely didn't think I did anything that would [draw a penalty]," Green said later. "I was surprised, but you can't argue with them."
Green added: "I'll be cautious next time – just give the ref the ball."

The officials also called an excessive-celebration penalty on LSU after Scott's score.
"I thought they were well within their celebratory rights, too," Richt said.

When I opened this thread I thought the refs pulled a Buffalo Wild Wings trip on a player. Both flags were pretty useless and the 2nd one seemed to be called to even things out.

it was, but it was useless. they might as well have had the penalty enforced next week. Just sad that this clouded a really good game.

The excessive celebration penalty against Georgia's A.J. Green late in Saturday's game with LSU should not have been called, the SEC supervisor of officials has told CBSSports.com.
Rogers Redding, the SEC supervisor of officials, said Monday that after reviewing video of the play, "I've concluded that it was one that we probably should have let go."
Trailing 12-7 at Sanford Stadium in Athens, Georgia's Joe Cox threw a touchdown pass to Green with only 1:09 remaining to give Georgia a 13-12 lead. Green was mobbed by his teammates in the end zone.
Officials ruled, however, that during the celebration Green was guilty of unsportsmanlike conduct and Georgia was penalized 15-yards on the ensuing kickoff. Georgia had to kick off from its own 15-yard line. After a 40-yard kickoff return by LSU’s Trindon Holliday, LSU had great field position on the Georgia 38-yard line. Charles Scott later ran 33 yards for a touchdown with 46 seconds left to give LSU the 20-13 victory. The penalty sparked outrage from the Georgia fans. Coach Mark Richt said Sunday that he didn't see the action that caused the penalty to be called on Green. After the game officials issued a statement that Green had gestured to the crowd. That gesture does not show up on the video of the game, which was televised by CBS.
"We tell our guys not to go looking for this stuff but if it's right in your face, you have to call it," Redding said. "He (the SEC official) is beating himself up pretty bad over this one."
