Question If you could give one piece of advice to a rookie sports bettor?

    Guys,

We have a lot of newbies and some old timers looking for tips from SBR and its users.

Can we get an advice thread going? It can be anything from suggesting parlay bettors get better odds than 6-1 or a simply not to chase losses on the late night game. Or, something you learned the hard way?

One post per suggestion. Nothing is too simple or too advanced.

When you start losing and losing...do not continue to increase units and lose more. Wait till the bad streak ends and pick your spots. Stay in the game!

Hedge ur very 1st bet at halftime, take a loss on the vig and never place another bet. This is a cruel and stressful hobby/business

Disable the casino at every online sportsbook you play at.

don't bet more than you can afford to lose. also be prepared to take some bad beats because eventually you will encounter some. if that kind of thing stresses you out then find something else besides gambling.

Always bet or set your bankroll for less than what you think you can afford to lose. If you lose sleep or it no longer becomes fun, it's time to reevalute what you're doing

I agree disable the casino is solid advice especially for those drunken forgetful nights.

Set up money management rules and follow them strictly. If you can't you can never win, shop for the best line so even if you lose you lose less. Watch line movement it can tell you if it was a good or bad opinion. And never ever tail JJ gold.

    1. If you do not have enough control to stay out of online casinos have them disabled at your sportsbook.
    2. Cap you games early and submit your opinions to the boards. bet accordingly.
    3. Money Management....youre going to lose and win. Every additional lose means you're closer to a win...but that doesn't mean you should double your wagers.
    4. Watch Justin7's videos as well as those hosted by Loshak....guys actually smart despite his Cool/Godlike appearance
    5. Once you bet your games for the day...STOP....win or lose.

Really it's simple most gamblers lose ......so it makes sense to fade the public. I have 5 sites I go to and get percentages 4 of them list top 10 plays for the day. It would shock you how many number 1's go down the toilet, college this week was Miami Pro
tie between Tenn and Da Bears. Kids like Sammy bet 85% chalk and usually 85% public games...doing that you will have a following because everyone is on your game any how. Bottom line you lose. But the guys who fade the public, well if you post your picks an win 4 in a row ....well great, but lose a pick and no one wants to hear you any more you picked the stupid team no one bet on I fade and stay in action all the time.

Take your bankroll you are going to post up with, and wipe your ass with and flush it down the toilet. Get the misery over with so you can move on with your life.

As some others have said, find the square play and fade it.

Find shitty teams and bet against them. The bad teams will find ways to let the better teams cover. Nothing worse than having +24 in a college game and the other teams has the ball up 21 and going for the cashing score.

Stick with something you know about. Don't think you have to bet every day.

Consider the cumulative record of Beat the Prick contestants. Realize these are the 4 best weekly picks of every capper, some of who are pros. This will give an idea what you're up against.

Don't follow another capper unless you know their past history of success. (past history of success doesn't mean they hit their last lock of the century pick)

Bet 1 dollar per game for an entire year, if you can do that you will be well ahead of the game.

Im not saying that will make you a winning player, but you will learn a lot (while still having some money left) and will have shown more self control than 95% of the degens out there.

If you don't have much time to cap your games and create mathematical formulas to come up with your own line, don't bet many games. If you have to only bet one game a week, make sure its a game you feel good about.

Its a bad feeling when you bet on a game simply because you are bored, then lose that bet. Only make bets you really like. Don't bet compulsively. Spot bet and do it infrequently..... unless you have a lot of time to spend on your capping and can come up with a line of your own that gives you an edge.

    Do you're homework!

If you're still not winning 65%+, place 1/2 of your bets sober early in the day and 1/2 your bets trashed as hell (you pick the substance).

Record the outcome and decide which state of mind is best.

    If inconclusive, repeat.
