Default Why is there no sportsbooks in Atlantic City

It boggles the mind.... Sure the internet is convinient but there nothing better than placing your wager , drinking some brews in front of an an Imax sized screen with fanatics worked up into a frenzy because there either winning big or having their asses handed to them. I'm only an hour out of AC, can't help but wonder WHY on EARTH do they not have books? (except for horse racing which isnt my thing).

Presumably because, unlike Las Vegas, they're not allowed by law to take sports wagers.

But I agree, it's damn good fun getting drunk on free casino booze and watching the matches on the big screen.

Just wonder why can't New Jersey pass the law to have A.C. accept sports bet.

I would love to place bet while at the bar too.

In the early 90's the Feds passed some crazy protectionist law known as the Bradley Bill. I think it is the amateur sports protection act.

Anyway, it gave all states six months or a year to decide if they wanted sports betting. If they passed, they would forever be prohibited from offering it.

New Jersey passed because they feared the "corruption" that might be associated with it and they didn't want it to tarnish their wholesome image.

If I remember correctly wasn't Rhode Island considering passing a bill that would allow sports betting not too long ago. I haven't heard anything recently on this one though. Anyone have any update on this one in regards to what might have happen?

I've lived in RI for 6 years and have never heard anything about legalized sportsbetting. If what the other poster said was true about the federal law, RI wouldn't even have that option.

You're right, BBD, a bill was introduced on 2/28/06 in the RI House to legalize sportsbetting at the two slot parlors currently in the state. It was sent to finance committee, where they must have killed it because it didn't go anywhere after that. Even if it were to pass, they would be in violation of federal law, but they would probably have a strong case against the feds if they really wanted to pursue it. That would never happen, though, because it's political suicide to crusade in favor of gambling.

It's not coincidence that the legislator who wrote the bill is from one of the most heavily-Guido districts in RI, and that's saying a lot.
