I know that you need to tip in certain situation but it really drives me crazy. I mean i get my haircut I have to tip (service), Have to tip the waitress, have to tip the valet guy to park a car in which I could have done myself, have to tip the bartender for serving me a drink, have to tip the black jack dealer for good luck, have to tip the doorman or the guy who stands in the elevator and pushes a button, have to tip a gas station attendant for full service, have to tip the pushy cabby, etc...It's starting to get really obnoxious. I figure I spend in a year anywhere between $150-$250 on tips and I am a student so who knows what you high rollers are tipping.

What puzzles me is why somethings need tips and others don't that are equal in nature.

For example, I don't tip a flight attendant, I don't tip the guy who changes my oil for my car, I don't tip a bus driver, I don't tip the babysitter anything extra on top of what s/he was owed, I don't tip a life guard, etc...

What's going on here guys...anyone else feel the same way

I agree 100%. Tipping is out of hand, especially in Vegas. Most cocktail waitresses act like the tip is expected. Like robots, most of them: put your drink down on the the table, extend hand for tip, walk away to repeat procedure. I'm quite sick of it myself.

You've touched a nerve there BB. Someone cutting your hair, someone bringing your food, you cant even chat with a atxi driver without thinking "is he after a big tip or are we just having a chat?".

Especially waitresses ... they get minimum wage (over £5 an hour in the UK) ... which is all the cleaner will get when weve all gone home BTW ... and Id rather be a waiter than a cleaner.

Its even worse if you go to a third world country because tourists can be leaving like massively disproportionate tips in places like India, Vietnam, Bali, etc ... we're talking like (sometimes) two days wages kind of tips .... for just ten minutes work sometimes.

Apparently, you're supposed to tip people who don't make enough money for the work they do. The other problem is that because tipping has got to be so routine, employers have built tips into their employees' salaries. If a restauraunt paid a waitress $10 an hour, she wouldn't need the tips. Instead, they pay her $3 an hour plus tips. The problem I have is tipping the dealer at the Hold'em table. What the hell has he done for me? BuddyBear is right as usual, tipping is getting out of hand and costly.

In Greece its a "custom" to tip a doctor before an operation. Im not kidding ... they give him a little parcel or envelope with a "gift". I couldn't believe it.

(Sorry, not literally on the operating table ... but you know when he does the bed visit the day before and the family are there).

Lot of jobs are set up around it. You make shit, but you get tips. I dont mind doing it because I like to reward good service, but I agree it can add up quick and who is usually tipped doesn't always make sense. I tend to tip in all the regular customs, plus some others that aren't traditional, especially if the service is exceptional.

I only TIP when it is convenient for me.
I give high tips only at clubs and restaurants that I visit frequently. The service I receive is unique and it is a great impression for the ladies when you don't do lines, there is always a table waiting for you and they call you by your name.
Of course a $10 tip down here in Costa Rica will have the bartender remember your name for the rest of his life. I guess in the UK you would have to tip them $100 for them to remember you.

No. I sure wish people tipped me, but I don't see that happening in my line of work.

I learned when I was younger that tip meant To Insure Promptness. So I had this discussion with some people as to why I should tip when I actually get a slow service.

Here, in restaurants, we have to tip no matter what since the waiter has to add 8% income of every bill on his/her tax report. But when I actually get a slow or bad service, I reduce my tip down to 10%. Some leave 8% + a penny, others write a note on the back of the bill. Many restaurants simply include the tip on the bill.

I also give 10% to the pizza guy, more if it's snowing (with good service, of course).

And no, you don't tip the owner.

I also place a chip for the BJ dealer to play with when I've had a winning session. Same way as I put down half a unit on a play for someone who gave me a winning pick I'm kidding here but I should start doing that. Dan, I'll place a bet for you

The way I play at Casinos now is I never tip untill the end.

Many nights after a hot streak has gone bad I wished I could get the dealer to open the tip box for a refund.

my mom was a waitress and a school teacher when we were growing up (my dad taught as well)...she always taught me to tip...I don't do anything crazy usually 15%, no less than 10% and no more that 20%...I just know the spot many people that are in the service industry are in...

I don't mind tipping food delivery person, because of the high price gas and extreme weather they have to bring the food to me. I give generous tips to waiters/waitress and food delivery.

I called Outback Steakhouse for a curbside pickup and the skank expected me to tip her. It's a freaking pickup, meaning I come to pickup why tip?

She asked if I wanted change back outta my money. I had no choice but to say "keep the change ($5)"

I made a post on therx months ago. I started a club called DART (Dindons Against Ridiculous Tipping). All of you are welcome to join my club. The philosophy is this: I will tip if I expect it will get me a return. For example, I will tip at a hotel desk if I think it may get me an upgrade. I WILL NOT overly tip someone who is simply doing their job (ie, waitress). They earn their wages. It is not my job to subsidize. If they feel they aren't paid well enough, they can look for another job. The other night at a restaurant I left a 26 cent tip. I slept quite well that night. I also don't agree with tipping a proportion of the bill. Is it harder for the waitress to carry a $35 steak as opposed to a $6 burger? Ridiculous. So what I do is this: When service meets my standards, I will tip 15% or $5, whichever is less. So basically my tip amount is capped at $5.

Now don't get me wrong. I'm not cheap. I just don't think it is logical to tip a waitress. People who I DO tip are: 1) the gas attendant who pumps my gas if I use Full Serve in the winter. 2) the maids at a hotel (they are so pleasant and they usually do a fine job).

I invite everyone to adopt these principles and join DART. I am not against tipping, but I AM against ridiculous tipping!

When it comes to casino's I also learned not to tip the dealer until the end. If you keep tipping the dealer every time you hit black jack, your payout ratio is going to be a lot worse. If when i leave I'm up, I'll give the dealer a tip. Otherwise, I don't want to tip if I'm in the red, unless there is something really speacial about the dealer.

I can understand tipping some poeple like a waiter/waitress. YOur dining experience can really be effected by how good their service is. And if they feel that by gving you better service they get more money, they will give you that better service. otherwise its a boring job, and if there is no tip to look foward to, they'll probably get burnt out pretty quickly.

Then you have people like skykaps at the airport. it doesn't matter whther you give them $1/bag or $10/bag they can only do so much for you, but if they were free, everyone would use them, so Ic an see the logic of suggestion that people tip them, just to cut down on the number of people who request thier service.

but I recently went to a resort in Perto Rico, and I ad no idea who I was suppose to tip, and how much I was supposed to tip. And it dorve me nuts. Every time a hotel employeed id something for me, I kept wondering, do I need to tip this person.. i think next time i go somehwere, I'm going to ask the hotel if they can send me a suggested tip list.

We used to get that all the time from Outback and always tipped. My buddy worked there and said the waiter/waitress has to prepare the entire bag, etc. I don't really care, as it's only a few bucks and these people are struggling. I don't remember the exact details, since it was when I was back in NY, but the Outback employees do expect a tip on curbside pickup.

Other restaurants do the same preparation for your pickups and they don't expect a tip.

Don't get me wrong. I give over 15% tip when I dine in at Outback, but don't think I should tip them for just picking up my food. Anyway, I always end up giving a tip when I go pickup at Outback.
