That's a bit of an about face from your previous stance that the tournament was a joke LINK. Hard for me to understand how the tournament can go from being "a joke" to the winner accomplishing "one of the greatest sports feats of all time."

george foreman becoming heavyweight champ in his late 40s early 50s was more impressive than what watson is doing

Mr. Gold, Phil Mickelson, arguably the 2nd or 3rd greatest player in the world was not in it so how can you say every top player in the world was there? no only that, but Tiger missed the cut in a major for what, the 2nd time in his career ever? Watson's play is impressive, but he's doing it in a field w/no Tiger and no Lefty.
asterisk time.

Excuse me, did Tiger miss the cut on the same course that Watson is leading on?

Hopefully a win by Watson will get Nicklaus to wipe the dust of his golf bag and get back to competitive golf, with every shot Nicklaus takes he'll tell himself anything that fukkin Watson can do I can do better, that fukkin Watson who beat me at Turnberry 30 years ago and at 4 other British Opens, that fukkin Watson who chipped in from the fringe on the 17th at Pebble Beach in the U.S. Open to steal it from him, Nicklaus will be back to number in the world in a couple of months with that motivation.

agreed but tiger is mired in the worst slump of his career and mickelson did not even play because of his wife's cancer, so in my mind whoever won, watson or otherwise, was getting an asterisk next to their name in the hoopster42 book of golf lore

That's like saying a team doesn't deserve a championship because the favorite was upset by someone else. Whoever wins this will be the Open champ, period.

Having said that, I would say Tiger is even money to win a major at age 60 or older IF HE LIVES TO BE THAT OLD.

It would certainly be up there with Foreman and Nolan Ryan throwing a no-hitter in his 40's. But no doubt about it if Watson hangs on it will be one of the greatest golf accomplishments of all-time.

A few questions...
How many people post using JJGold's account? 5 hours ago Watson would never win, and he wouldn't even finish in the top 15....now he is considering the possibility of Watson pulling off a "historic sports day".
If that isn't the case, is JJ being treated for multiple personality disorder?
I enjoy JJ's posts and videos, but man..he is off the reservation on this one.

Bottom line is, if Watson wins, any true sports fan will recognise the magnitude of such an acheivement and realise it would be churlish to try and compare to other great feats, but it will equal those other great feats in it's uniqueness.
Some feats are so rare or so uniquely outstanding they are beyond comparison and will only ever be equalled in greatness and historical value, regardless of the particular sport.
Expecting to get sensible answers from people who somehow think this tournament is devalued because Woods didn't play as well as Watson over the same difficult holes on the same difficult course and who don't even have an appreciation of what is actually being acheived, is probably a waste of time.

I heard some guy who is 81 years old came in 13th in a NASCAR event after starting a lap down this weekend, I'd have to put that above Watson's feat.

one of the greatest sports feats ever? not even close.
i wouldn't even have been the top GOLF feat of the last 13 months, tiger winning the u.s. open on one leg has to be far more impressive than a 59-year old EIGHT TIME MAJOR CHAMPION winning another major. on a course he has won numerous times, and a course that favors short careful shots.
WOODS WON THE US OPEN ON ONE LEG. ON THE LONGEST COURSE IN THE HISTORY OF MAJOR CHAMPIONSHIPS. AGAINST PHIL.
i would put joey chestnut eating 68 hot dogs in 10 minutes as one of the greatest sports feats ever before what watson "could" have done...

as far as "age" feats are concerned, i still believe george foreman regaining heavyweight championship in his late 40s early 50s is unmatched

just because you're old doesn't make it impressive to hit a golf ball into a hole, now maybe if he would've thrown a football 200 yards through a 3-foot hole at the age of 90 that could be considered a "great sports feat".
