Tim Wakefield. Best Red Sox Pitcher Ever?

I know it sounds like a stretch and the stats do not necessarily reflect it, but if intangibles ever meant anything in a sport, he has it aces over ANY player in their history. The guy has started, mid relived, acted as a closer. Took a seat in the World Series without and griping. Never has a problem with the media. Never gets arrested. Doesn't get payed an inordinate amount of money. All-Star in every sense of the word!!

    My favorite BOSOX player.

I believe he once won the ROBERTO CLEMENTE Award also if not mistaken.

Already the Red Sox all-time leader in losses by a longshot, he could become their all-time leader in wins also if he elects to play again next year, which I think he will.

Still has a 0.334% of making the HOF.

I love the guy; his professional attitude and approach is refreshing in this day and age. But greatest Red Sox pitcher ever is a stretch-&-a-half, Casper. We're talking about a franchise that can boast mound talent like Cy Young, Joe Wood, Pedro Martinez, Lefty Grove, Luis Tiant and Roger Clemens just to name a half-dozen. Would I want him on an All-Red Sox team? You bet. Would I pick him first? No.

I am just throwing it out there. God knows Clemens, Martinez, Grove & Tiant are way better pitchers, but Wakefield is more professional than all of them combined. I just have mad respect for the guy.

Didn't forget Young, and the only reason I left Ruth off is despite his pitching prowess, he's still most remembered for that big bat. In the end, my pick for the best Red Sox hurler ever would probably be Joe Wood. Had his career cut short with injury, and for that reason he's not well-known to a lot of fans, even those that think they know a lot of baseball history. Dude was as good as Walter Johnson who just might be the greatest pitcher all-time.

Smokey Joe Wood was a sick pitcher Willie. I agree. The thing I like is that in my 34 years as a Red Sox fan, he is the one Red Sox pitcher that has stayed around for a LONG time and NEVER has had an unkind word said about him. In the tough Boston media, that alone should earn him a Hall Of Fame nod.

Taking EVERYTHING into consideration, her are my tops in Red Sox history..........many of these can be swithed around...........but these are all deserving of being in the top ten.

    1. BABE RUTH
    2. CY YOUNG
    3. ROGER CLEMENS
    4. PEDRO MARTINEZ
    5. JOE WOOD
    6. LEFTY GROVE
    7. LUIS TIANT
    8. MEL PARNELL
    9. JONATHON PAPELLBON
10T. BOB STANLEY, TIM WAKEFIELD, DICK RADATZ

Bob Stanley had 115 wins and 132 saves for the Bosox!

Five to ten years from now, Beckett and Lester could make a push for this top ten. In fact, Beckett could be there in 2-3 years.

Wakefield is ahead of Papelbon IMO. Longevity alone gives him that. Bob Stanley had longevity, but no rings, that gives Wakefield the edge IMO. Dick Radatz was sick, but once again, longevity gives it to Wakefield.

Met Oil Can Boyd once after a game. The guy seemed like a fun loving guy who just seemed a little off kilter. Loved that about him. Very intense.

Boyd says he can pitch in the majors right now...........if fact, he tried to make a comeback in 2007-8.

Not sure if he is still trying or not.

What about Eckersly? He had his best years as a reliever after he left the Bosox, but he had some good years with them. I'd certainly take The Eck over Stanley.

The guy I am going to mention is certianly not the best, but his name deserves mentioning. When you take into consideration the different roles of starting and relieving, don't forget about Ellis Kinder. He went 23-6 as a starter in 1949, and then went 10-6, 27 saves and an ERA of 1.85 as a reliever in 1953.

Not even close, he is very hittable

He has longevity that is about it over the other top Bosox pitchers

I'm not trying to sound like a prick, but it may come off that way...

But isn't this just another fan debate with no real point and no impact on handicapping, not to mention lacking any resolution? I've seen all of the Jordan/A-Rod/Woods threads... these are more appropriate for a fan forum, not a betting forum IMO.

    Wants to return in 2012

    http://aol.sportingnews.com/mlb/stor...urn-to-red-sox

Tim Wakefield has pitched for the Boston Red Sox for 17 seasons. He'd like to make it 18.

“I have a strong desire to pitch one more year for the Red Sox,” Wakefield, 45, told the Boston Herald.

This guy is awful. He obviously has no other skills, b/c he sucks @ pitching though still wants to give up some more runs. First move for Bobby, as the new manager, should be to tell Wakefield to test free agency.
