Also, how should I deposit $$? Can I still use neteller?

Pinnacle would be the book i'd sugguest to you bud. However you mentioned a recreational type book. Might I sugguest giving Bodog a try.

No not imo...even if you bet small Pinny should still be the best choice. But depends if you want to phone in bets, they dont have that. Jamaica would be my next pick after pinny if id bet small.

just curious - why is VIP not recommended? Are they thinking of eliminating U.S. customers?

Cris has a pokerroom with a decent amount of players I think.
But i usually recommend using a real pokersite like Pokerstars.
The reason i dont recommend VIP is, that i simply dont think they play in the same class as Pinny/Cris/Jamaica etc.
For example you can get better lines and more betting options at Pinny, so there is no reason at all to pick VIP.
And i hate the software.

You can't go wrong with Pinnacle. ********** is good for small amounts as an alternative to Neteller and your account is immediatetly funded without any fees.
