the road (author of No Country for Old Men)

The Road is a 2006 novel by American writer Cormac McCarthy. It is a post-apocalyptic tale of a journey taken by a father and his young son over a period of several months, across a landscape blasted by an unnamed cataclysm that destroyed all civilization and, apparently, most life on earth. The novel was awarded the 2007 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and the James Tait Black Memorial Prize for Fiction in 2006.

The Road follows an unnamed father and son journeying together toward the sea across a post-apocalyptic landscape, some years after a great, unexplained cataclysm has destroyed civilization and almost all life on Earth. The setting is extremely bleak: the sun is obscured by a layer of ash so thick that the pair must breath through masks, and plants do not grow. The surviving remnants of humanity have been largely reduced to thoughtless violence and cannibalism. Realizing that they will not survive another winter in their present location, the father leads them through this desolate landscape towards the sea, sustained by a vague hope of finding other "good people" like them.

The Road was originally scheduled to be released in November 2008. It was pushed back to be released in December and pushed back a second time to sometime in 2009. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the studio decided that the film would benefit from a longer post-production process and a less crowded release calendar.[12] A new release date was scheduled for October 16, 2009.[1]
Esquire's Tom Chiarella screened the film before it was released and called it "a brilliantly directed adaptation of a beloved novel, a delicate and anachronistically loving look at the immodest and brutish end of us all. You want them to get there, you want them to get there, you want them to get there — and yet you do not want it, any of it, to end." He also referred to it as "the most important movie of the year".[13]

the road is actually more of a love story between father and son than it is action. the trailer was produced to attract people who haven't read the book. expect a LOT of dialogue between father and son, more than anything. btw the ending is :-(

and in the book they never once even hint at explaining what caused "the event" or whatever. i don't know what all that tv footage is about, actually i hope it isn't even in the movie. there should be very little charlize theron in it too, perhaps just in flashbacks, if i recall correctly.

and the thief is played by omar from the wire

Its a good movie but it not as we are thinking about it. I had seen some trailer of this movie, those show that it will be a average movie. I will 5/10 to this movie.

Avatar was pretty good. I'd give it a 7/10. Great graphics, kinda dances with wolves type of story but sci fi. Not as good as Dances with Wolves for me but entertaining.

heres a comment from IMDB that sums up the comparison...

They are both great film's in their own right. Avatar is a sci-fi feast for the eyes but lacks the emotional depth and screenplay that DWW has. Both are wonderful for different reasons. Avatar I think could have been much better story wise if it was about an hour longer. Really get into the characters and let the audience develop stronger emotional ties with them. Visually however it is flawless and the greatest technical acheivement I have seen in a very long time.

Note that Avatar is already a long movie (3 hours).
