Top 5 Worst ever Sports Choke Job, You ever witness!
Now that the Magic's has done it, in one of the biggest game in the biggest stage I figure it's time to rehash the biggest choke game in sports to date. These are my top five that I had personally watched that happened on the biggest stage.
1)Memphis losing to Kansas in the NCAA 2008 Finals
Why-All Memphis needed to do was foul or make on Free throw to win it all as a Mid Major School, which wasn't has done it since UNLV in 1990.
2) Scott Norwood missed Field Goal in the 1990 Superbowl
Why-The Bill out played the Giants the entire day, and Norwood couldn't even hit a very makable 43 yard field goal that would of gave the Bills their first Superbowl win ever.
3)Mariano Rivera Blown save in 2001 Game 7 World series
Why-Rivera was coming off 23 consecutive post season saves heading into the 9th inning in this game. Rivera was virtually unbeatable, until this game.
4)Earnest Byner fumble vs Denver 1987 AFC Championship game
Why-1st and Goal on the 2 yard line with 1:12 left, and all Byner needed to do was lounge into the endzone that would of likely forced overtime. Instead Byner is stripped from behind, and missed a golden opportunity at potentially making it to the Superbowl for the first time ever.
5)The Orlando Magics final 13 seconds Game 4 NBA 2009 Finals
Why-Dwight needed to make one FT to make the game two possession, or Jameer Nelson forcing a foul on Derek Fisher to make to pressure Free throw. Instead he allow Fisher to make a three, and the Magics missed a great opportunity at turning this series completely around.

Impressive list, but I'll add that to this day nothing beats the events of the night of October 25th, 1986. The passage of time and a couple of championships have healed the wounds, but the 10th inning of Game 6, RedSox-Mets, continues to be the ultimate standard by which all collapses must be judged against.

I hear you, but honestly the BIGGEST baseball collapse is the Yankees in 04'. No team has ever choked that badly in the playoffs.

First thing I thought of was a baseball team I played on about 15 years ago. We went undefeated through the season and playoffs to make it to the final. The average score was probably about 12-1.
We had this ridiculous pitcher who was way too good to be in the league. It was pathetic how much he loved being the big fish in the little pond. Everyone hated us.
Anyway we lost 1-0. The bats just shut down. Major choke. Everyone was happy.

I don't think you can put Norwood on that list...that was a 49 yard kick....no gimme by any means. I know it was expected that he make it but it wasn't an easy Field Goal. People always forget about that.
You forgot a HUGE one.....what about Greg Norman? He has to make that list...it was a 6 Stroke lead going into the final round!

Euro 2008. Czech - Turkey = 2-3
Czech up by 2-0 till 75' min then 2-1 and the last two minutes Turkey scores another one to tie 2-2 and in injury time another one for 2-3.
I lost a big chunk on that game.

Perhaps the mother of all chokes, already mentioned:
Most recent super choke was Chelsea in semi-finals CL, at home against Barcelona. Eleven against ten, and up 1-0, they decided to play 'prevent' defense. And got hit with an injury time goal that sent Barca to the final.

I believe this is the definitive answer. I have heard people speak of pulling a Van de Velde to describe a choke job.
When your name becomes a synonym for the act, you have made it.

game 4 by the Lakers in the 2008 NBA finals
the Celtics went on a 21–3 run to end the third quarter.........
The Celtics' victory in Game 4 was the largest comeback in the NBA Finals since 1971

Certainly not the biggest choke job, but the 2009 Detroit Red Wings losing game 7 at home after being up 3-2 to the Penguins.

2002 World Series:
Giants up 3 games to 2 and 5-0 in game 6 going to the bottom of the 7th. Dusty Baker pulls Ortiz after a coupla base runners get on and tosses him the game ball. The Angels come back to win the game off of the Giants' bullpen, then Livan Hernandez loses to Lackey in game 7...

Another big choke 2 weeks earlier made the Norwood miss possible. With the 49ers leading 13-12 with just over 2 minutes remaining and basically a 1st down away from winning the game, Roger Craig fumbles on a run into the line the Giants recover and make the gimme field goal to win 15-13 and the Giants and not the Niners play the Bills in the Super Bowl.

Jay Williams was playing, I think it was Maryland or Virginia, but Duke came back from 10 down in the last 40+ seconds of the game. If it were the other way around the game would have been a classic.
