    Default Challenges among posters

Following JJ's thread about forums lending money (can't stop laughing), I was wondering how you guys felt about challenges.

You see many gamblers in forums challenging each other, going one on one, with the promise of paying 1k if losing. Some of these guys don't know each other. They just happen to post in the same forum. Have you ever done that? Ever been stiffed? Would you actually consider doing it?

I have asked for loans from posters and get the cash but pay promptly.

the best way to run a challege type thing right. is to have a book or, a trusted party hold the money. other than that, i wouldn't recomend just 2 posters going heads up with what i have seen over the years.

I do it a lot but only if the money is posted up with a trusted party.

Smart idea, but posters should learn never to lend money to strangers.

If you are not personal friends of someone I would not loan out money

Right off the top of my head, I can think of 5 cases of players getting stiffed in the sort of challenges you are describing.

Once it was a forum moderator doing the stiffing (I won't say the forum). Once it was a "Hall of Fame" member of the forum. There have been varying amounts of money involved (I'm never sure if it's worse when someone stiffs over a very big amount of money or very small).

    It's all very pathetic.

Probably shouldn't lend any money at all, unless you are a bank. If you give money to a personal friend, you should consider it a gift, not a loan.

thats not always the case either JJ. sometimes i won't even loan a good friend money, if they have a bad rep on paying it back.

But you're OK with begging on internet forums for donations for your rent/new boiler?

I paid $1k on a bet I lost and beat the same guy for a dime on a bet he made up. He was a mod at the OGD. He stiffed me, tried to change the bet and the typical stiff stuff. Had bets with roberto and peep which I won and they paid.

My advice; don't bet unless you are friends with the guy and someone else will hold the money.

I was thinking that I wouldn't even do it with a personal friend. In fact, I only bet 5-10 bucks with friends. And when I win, I offer double or nothing. I don't care much about taking a friend's money. I just like to make a game more interesting... and bug the h*** out of him when I win

If you give money to a personal friend, you should consider it a gift, not a loan.
Slacker, I like that thinking and I tend to do that... despite knowing better. Some friends are just too irresponsible and I'm not doing them a favor by giving them money instead of insisting on a payback.
