MLB debut tonight for highly touted Met phenom Matt Harvey

    Here's the book on Harvey.

    Prospect Info and Scouting Report

    Matt Harvey / RHP, NYM
    Born 3/27/1989 (23 yrs old)
    Mystic, CT, USA
    School: North Carolina
    Height 6-4
    Weight 210
    Bats/Throws R/R
    45

    ScoutingBook Combine Ranking (7/26/2012): #78
    MLB.com/MiLB.com Season Preview: #38
    Scout.com/FOX Sports: #52
    ESPN: #38
The Sporting News: Unranked or n/a
    Baseball America 2012: #54
    Baseball Prospectus: #25

The seventh overall pick in the 2010 draft, Matt Harvey is a tall righthander from Mystic, Connecticut who pitched his college ball at UNC, where a few tweaks to his high-school delivery paid off with extra cheese on his fastball. He can dial that smooth, easy heat up to 98mph and has a propensity for throwing ground balls. That's a nice prescription for a major league opportunity. His command is spotty, which has slowed his progression, but it's nothing out of the norm for such a young, high-upside arm. He should move quickly through the rest of the pitching-poor Mets system, and it wouldn't be a shock to see him in Flushing sometime in 2012.

    Matt Harvey - P

    Scouting Report

Fastball: Harvey was throwing his fastball up to 96-97 mph and sustaining the velocity deep into his start.

Fastball movement: There's some decent life to it.

Slider: It's a relatively new pitch for him, so it's not always sharp, though he showed some glimpses of a decent slider.

Curve: In high school, he featured a pure, overhand power curve. He's gone more to the slider, though he'll still throw the curve on occasion.

Changeup: He doesn't use it much, but he's got a feel for it, and it could be an average offering.

Control: Command has often been an issue for Harvey. While it's been better, it's still not pinpoint control.

Poise: He's improved his mound presence and worked on maintaining the same approach regardless of what happens around him.

Physical Description: Harvey has filled out his 6-foot-4 frame quite a bit in college and is a big and durable-looking right-hander.

    Medical Update: Healthy.

Strengths: He showed a plus fastball and shows flashes of the above-average breaking stuff he once had. He's also got a feel for a changeup.

Weaknesses: There are still some delivery issues, though what got him out of whack as a sophomore has largely been corrected. Command is still a problem at times.

Summary: Once a top high school prospect, Harvey has reclaimed his status as a first-round candidate with a resurgent junior season. The delivery problems that had him so off his game as a sophomore have largely been corrected, though there are still some issues there that can effect his command and ability to throw his breaking ball. Still, Harvey was showing an above-average to plus fastball and maintaining his velocity, to go along with glimpses of good breaking stuff and a feel for a change. He's come a long way this season, and he likely won't have to wait too long to be redrafted.

I know its not a big deal unless your a Mets fans. But we have 2 pitchers that look like they are going to be good Harvey and Wheeler (still in AA) Mets have a bunch of young hard throwing guys in the system now also. At least with Harvey we have a starter who can break 92 only Gee could do that consistently and he is out for the year.
Harvey runs a heavy FB in the mid to upper 90's. The thing about Harvey is when the Mets moved him up to AA he struggled then settled in an pitched well...when the moved him up to AAA he struggled then settled in again. He has a problem with walks but has been better of late except for last week when all the Met brass showed up to watch him and he walked 4 hit 1 in 6 innings but did pitch out of many jams,
Im hoping he pumps it up today and does well (but his history shows slow starts moving up) The Mets have basically fallen apart because of the pig pen ....the rest of the team has been ok. Collins is the wrong guy for this team he plays old vets that suck we have new kids that can really play, Valdespin-Baxter-Tejada-Turner-Newy let them get out there now an make some noise.....we arent in the race anymore.
Harvey +168 a token bet for me tonight just so I can root.

Got the night off so Let's go Met!!!!!

I'm looking forward to seeing what Harvey has tonight.
I'm hearing he's a good kid, and has a lights out heater.
+155 is enticing, but has a tough draw on the road in the desert versus Miley.

Sounds like potential but struggles with command. Sort of like Bauer did. Kubel is probably licking his chops.

Under first five might be the play.
Miley has good stuff, Harvey probably will confuse 'Zona the first time through the order, being a never seen before kid with good stuff.

Mets looking for a rookie to help bring them back to life ... Idk I'd be all over zona but the juice is way to high for me .. I'll pass and look to see how this Harvey kid does his first time out

i had to go with d-backs here tonight. They have a good record against Mets at home. If Mets were home I would be playing them. Dang near bet Mets tonight too. Line looked to juicy to pass up but i stuck with d-backs instead.

  21. #21

Mets bats break out tonight. they have faced dominating pitching over this recent stretch. now they get Miley who is regressing and who they already handled once. I think the Mets will play with a lot of extra juice tonight with Harvey on the mound. think the bats wake up. playing TT over.

I'm in Fairfield, he's a Ct. High School legend. Charlie Morton too, OK, he's not having that great of a MLB career so far, but Morton used to pitch ball here too.

Thinking dbacks to score first at minus 105.. first inning jitters and on the road. Gives the dbacks a little value since they are batting bottom of the inning
