Its Official Paterno Statue Coming Down

    Associated Press 6:47 a.m. CDT, July 22, 2012

Penn State University will remove the famed statue of Joe Paterno outside its football stadium, eliminating a key piece of the iconography surrounding the once-sainted football coach accused of burying child sex abuse allegations against a retired assistant.
The university said Sunday that it will take down the larger-than-life monument in the face of an investigative report by former FBI Director Louis Freeh that found the late coach, along with three top Penn State administrators, concealed the abuse claims against Jerry Sandusky more than a decade ago in order to shield the university and its football program from negative publicity.
A spokeswoman for the Paterno family did not immediately return phone and email messages Sunday morning.
Construction vehicles and police arrived shortly after dawn Sunday, barricading the street and sidewalks near the statue, erecting a chain-link fence then concealing the statue with a blue tarp.
A live video feed posted on the website of the Centre Daily Times of State College showed workers in white hard hats draping a plastic sheet over the statue, preparing for its removal.
Penn State President Rod Erickson said he decided to have the statue removed and put into storage because it "has become a source of division and an obstacle to healing."
"I believe that, were it to remain, the statue will be a recurring wound to the multitude of individuals across the nation and beyond who have been the victims of child abuse," Erickson said in a statement released at 7 a.m. Sunday.
He said Paterno's name will remain on the campus library because it "symbolizes the substantial and lasting contributions to the academic life and educational excellence that the Paterno family has made to Penn State University."
The bronze sculpture outside Beaver Stadium has been a rallying point for students and alumni outraged over Paterno's firing four days after Sandusky's Nov. 5 arrest — and grief-stricken over the Hall of Fame coach's Jan. 22 death at age 85.
But it turned into a target for critics after the Freeh report's stunning allegation of a cover-up by Paterno, ousted President Graham Spanier and two Penn State officials, Athletic Director Tim Curley and Vice President Gary Schultz. Their failure to report Sandusky to child-welfare authorities in 2001 allowed him to continue molesting boys, the report found.
Paterno's family, along with attorneys for Spanier, Curley and Schultz, vehemently deny any suggestion they protected a pedophile. Curley and Schultz await trial on charges of failing to report child abuse and lying to a grand jury but maintain their innocence. Spanier hasn't been charged. Sandusky was convicted last month of 45 counts of sexual abuse of 10 boys.
Some newspaper columnists and former Florida State coach Bobby Bowden have said the statue should be taken down, while a small plane pulled a banner over State College reading, "Take the statue down or we will."
But Paterno still has plenty of fans, and Penn State's decision to remove the monument won't sit well with them. One student even vowed to "chain myself to that statue" if there was an attempt to remove it.
University officials had called the issue a sensitive one in light of Paterno's enormous contributions to the school over a 61-year coaching career. The Paterno family is well-known in the community for philanthropic efforts, including the millions of dollars they've donated to the university to help build a library and fund endowments and scholarships.
The statue, nearly 7 feet tall and weighing more than 900 pounds, was built in 2001 in honor of Paterno's record-setting 324th Division 1 coaching victory and his "contributions to the university."

He did go to the police... Gary Schultz was the head of the police department. It was on McQueary to go to the police as a witness, because he was the one who actually saw what happened. He didn't.

It amazes me how many people put all the blame on Paterno, strictly because he's the biggest name in this. People need to actually read the Freeh report, because all it is is a bunch of assumptions and guesses by the Freeh team. They acknowledge in the report that they have no idea if Paterno was even updated properly on the 1998 investigation, or what he was told.

Maybe Paterno knew everything, maybe he knew nothing. There hasn't been any evidence shown to confirm either side. Hopefully the truth comes out during the trials. Some type of real evidence pointing either way.

I don't care if he covered up or not, but I do care about his reputation and name being destroyed on some guys assumptions over a decade afterwards with no evidence backing it.

I can't believe there's support for him, it's mind blowing. What he did would've landed him in prison, and certainly has landed him in hell (if you believe that sort of the thing).

Sad that there's people out there saying "remember the good times.". Yea, let's ignore that he covered up child rape.....let's just focus on the wins and graduation rate.

Louis Freeh is not some dipshit just giving his best guess about what went on. He left no doubt Joe knew damn well he was protecting a pedophile, and chose to continue doing it for years.

Doesn't matter what good he did, the bad far outweighs it all. Fukk Joe Paterno.

Its mind blowing, at first, but these kind of events are enlightening in that you can really tell who is thinking critically about the situation and who is just a fkn moron, same thing happened with Michael Jackson...all those fools still supported him and whatnot...

I said the same thing last night. Playing poker and MJ came on the radio. It literally makes me sick that we still play his music on the radio. He molested children. He paid some of the children to stay out of court. I don't give a shit if he could dance.

Man I wish I wouldve never come into this damn thread, I literally can't talk about this stuff without it ruining my day. I will never wrap my brain around how people can be supporting Paterno anymore. It makes my vision blurry with anger. Maybe it's because the line of work I am in, maybe its because I have two kids of my own.....but this small interaction about this will cause me to be in a prick mood all day.

Had nice plans today with the wife: dinner with friends and then Batman.....now it's all ruined. I will be a grumpy fukk for the next 12 hours now. Fukk me

Oh hey there internet tough guy.

I meant on a personal level. It doesn't affect me either way is what I meant. Obviously if he helped cover it up, he was a shitty human being and deserves to rot in hell. It doesn't change my life tho (where the "i don't care either way" comes in) as I have no allegiance to PSU or Paterno. I should've worded it better, thats my fault.

People need to actually look at what has presented so far and make a decision for themselves. Without truthful testimony from the 3 main guys involved who are still alive, we will never really know who knew what. Will that ever happen? Who knows. If Joe did in fact help cover it up, his legacy deserves every bit of what people are saying about it now and he deserves every bit of pain that he helped cover up. Bottom line is, though, that we don't know what he did yet

tt is drowning his sorrows drinking straight from the deep fryer at his local Golden Corral. Guy was a huge Sandusky supporter and Paterno backer. He may end it all and eat a salad.

statue should be melted down and made into dildo and rammed up the ass of all people involved, including joe's corpse. and no sideloaded you can't pretend you worked for penn st.

Same thing with that Gary Glitter guy. Even after he was convicted of possessing child pornography, arenas around the world still played his "Rock and Roll..." song and of course he still received royalties for this when they did. It was only after he was convicted of child molestation in Asia did I notice that they didn't play it any more.

Fire someone for being found not guilty of any wrongdoing? Because thats what happened when Sandusky was investigated in 1998. The cops found no evidence of wrongdoing. So you're saying Paterno should've fired him for that, when according to the Freeh report, they don't even know what info Paterno had on the investigation? Sounds like you're the idiot.

I hope the victims get all the help they need, both psychologically and financially. I'm sure they'll get it. Try thinking logically and with the facts, rather than just on emotion.

It's been repeated several times that joe knew about this guy. There was an investigation and it found that joe and everyone in the front office knew and covered it up. You would not be standing by joes side if that was you're son so stfu.
