Default Two Italian players banned for two months for gambling offence

Flachi given two-month ban for illegal gambling

    Friday • September 22, 2006

Sampdoria striker Francesco Flachi has been given a two-month ban by the disciplinary council of the Italian football federation (FIGC) for his role in an illegal gambling ring.

Police intercepted calls made by the 31-year-old forward last year in which he tried to obtain advance information about allegedly fixed matches before placing bets on them.

The interceptions led to the FIGC opening an inquiry.

Moris Carrozzieri, Flachi's former Sampdoria team-mate who now plays for Serie A rivals Atalanta, was also banned for two months for his involvement while Sampdoria were hit with a fine of 20,000 euros for 'objective responsibility'.

It has long been forbidden for any footballer in Italy to bet on matches in his own championship, but last year the FIGC extended that ban to include any form of gambling.

In July, five Serie A clubs - Juventus, AC Milan, Fiorentina, Lazio and Reggina - were found guilty of match-fixing in the 2004-05 season. — AFP

None of those 2 were in the world cup squad. Gianluigi Buffon the WC gk was investigated during the summer but acquitted even though he admitted to betting on soccer over a million euros (supposedly not on his matches) and his team being relagated. Frankly I think he wasn't touched 'cause they won the tournament.

If Italy were to have lost the World Cup. The shit would still be hitting the fan as we speak.

Italian soccer leagues are very corrupt.

Approx 30% of games in Series A are rigged
