Default Refs and commercials killing NFL

First of all theres no sour grapes here fyi im 2-0 and winng my thrid game so im proably gonna go 3-0 today, That said The refs in the NFL have to be put on a leash. Football is unwatchable with all the penalties, timeouts ,and car commercials. The Nfl has to some how diminish the amounts of petti-tat penalties called. Its two plays a flag. Big play flag. Holding, marginal illegal use of hands etc. This crap takes away from the game. Unless a penalty clearly and I mean clearly affects the plays outcome the refs should keep the flags in there pocket. Am I alone in this or does any other football fan (over 30) notice an increase in these stupid flag calls?????

I agree. A lot of flags are being thrown.

Wasnt there 3 or 4 plays in a row to start the Texans/Seahawks game with a flag?

I've noticed it too. Maybe they need to increase the penalty yardage on some of these penalties, so these guys just quit doing it. Maybe the rules need to be reviewed and refined for the referees. I don't know. But football is becoming penalty-ball. It sucks.

I went to see the Dolphins play a few seasons back and Wow! 90% of the time the teams just stood on the field waiting for the signal that TV had finished running another 8 minute commercial set. Not ever gonna go the other way though...greed and cashola rule.

CBS is the worst offender. They break for everything. At least fox and espn stay live during some timeouts.

The games were bumped to 4:15 so that the 1:00 games whould be over before the late game started and we could get our action in, now all the 1:00 games run over the 4:15 game

I just tape the games and watch them later, skipping the ads/timeouts/injuries/halftime.

I just use the good 'ol VHS. I've got stacks and stacks of NFL tapes from over the years. I usually tape over games on a cyclical basis, but I managed to dig up Buffalo at Dallas from 2003 last week. Kinda neat watching Bledsoe facing Parcells newly in Dallas, but an ugly game filled with mistakes on both sides. I think the final was 16-13 or something, probably about like the Giants game yesterday.

I'd probably prefer Tivo if I tried it. I just haven't gotten ahold of one yet. I'm a slacker.

I hear this quite a bit from people, and it's hard to deny it sometimes. Some of the games seem pretty unreal the way they play out. At least it's not pro wrestling.

CBS is also guilty of doing this during March Madness. They have to squeez out every penny. I hate watching any sports program on CBS.

The games are getting gradually longer unless they is a lot of running.

I like how if one team scores they go to commercial then after the kickoff they go to commercial again. Or the worst is when something happens (timeout, injury) happens before the quarter ends so you have to watch two commercial sets in a row.

Good point. Whenever a team scores, I generally treat it like an "extended" commercial, going to the kitchen and making up some nachos, etc. I generally just skip the kickoff. Plus, I've always got the VCR recording the game, so I can rewind and watch it during the "next" commercial if something interesting happens.

Anyone remember maybe 6 or 7 years ago when the games started going over 3 1/2 hours? They changed the rules so that the clock keeps running during an incompletion or out of bounds play, except during the very end of the halves. Sounds like they're going to have to find another way to shorten up the game. 10-minute quarters, anyone? (man, I hope not)

the westwood one radio network coverage of MNF isn't so bad. because they don't goto commercial breaks as much. they give insight on whats going on in the game.

Notre Dame games are the worst, NFL not as bad. I notice this more when in the gym watching games. At home I just have another beer and not worry about it, but there I am running until the end of the first half, 2:00 left and takes about 15 minutes or in the ND game seemed like 20. Start to get tired :P
