    Exclamation Missing Hard Drive Icon

This is just a "FYI", for anyone that runs into this problem down the road. Or has the problem, and does not know how to fix it.

This happen to me and it was bugging the sheit out of me. It didnt hurt anything with the Hard Drive D: icon missing, but just the fact it was not there, did not sit right with me.

I did the whole right click on the drive, and select properties looking for a "change icon" button. But that option was not there. I even fired up XP TweakUI, and selected to repair icons. But nothing.

So I just started looking at all the files in the root directory of the D: Hard Drive. I noticed a "autorun.ini" sitting in there. I thought to myself, could that be the problem? Because the command line for CDROM icons are listed in the autorun.ini's.

Well I went ahead and deleted it, and rebooted. Low and behold, the Hard Drive Icon was back. Boy was I relieved.

So the first thing to do, is look for a "autorun.ini" in the root directory of the hard drive with the problem.

Well, I hope this helps anyone that reads it. Could be good for a future search for others that need help fixing this problem.

You don't have it disabled in the system BIOS do you?

Open it up by pushing a paper clip into a tiny hole on the front panel. Likely, you have a disconnected cable. Take out the tray and locate a wide (most likely brown) cable. Unscrew and take off the drive's metal cover, reconnect the cable. Secure it in with a piece of duck tape and put everything back. It should be working unless the drive is fried and needs a replacement.

Couldnt get the laptop completely apart to get to the CDrom. I searched for hidden screws in the spots that were stuck to no avail.
