Default "Culpepper looks forward to facing Steelers"

    Associated Press

Touted as a worthy heir to Dan Marino, Culpepper will put his reputation — on the line when he makes his Dolphins debut in the NFL opener Thursday in Pittsburgh against the Super Bowl champions.

"I'm extremely excited," he said Sunday. "I've got a huge smile because of where I've come from and where I see us going."I just want to see them just try to take a few hits on me!"

Daunte's a big addition for us," Pro Bowl end Jason Taylor said. "He's one of the best quarterbacks in the league. He has been there and done that. He's got all the talent in the world. He's got the competitiveness. He's got the fire and leadership. It's great to see someone on the other side of the ball like that. Just the energy he brings and the respect he demands and the way guys rally around him will be great for us."

Culpepper's assertiveness will be especially helpful at Pittsburgh, where the Dolphins will find themselves in a charged atmosphere with the hometown crowd cheering on its championship team on prime-time television. The fans might be in for a very rude awakening.

"He wants somebody on the Steelers to hit him, because he will hit them back," McMichael said. "He brings a different dimension to the quarterback position that I haven't seen before. He's a tough guy out there."

Culpepper downplayed expectations against Pittsburgh because Steelers will be without Ben Roethlisberger! "We've got a great chance to be a great team," he said then. "I feel we're going to be a playoff-contending team and have a chance to play for the Super Bowl. We've got the weapons to do it."
