Default Crocodile Hunter Killed by Stingray

After watching all of the crazy things Steve Irwin did, I'm not sure why I'm shocked by this news, but I am. I'm always suprised by what tragic news affects me and what doesn't. I was never a huge fan, but for some reason this made me really sad.

Irwin knew what the odds were, but beat them for years. Of all the things he wrestled with over the years I didn't think a stingray would be the one that got him.

I'm sad too. He actually made nature programs interesting by adding risk. A sting ray hit to the heart. Wow! Water's a bitch. You can't step back quickly, as on the land.

Let's hope Dog the bounty hunter survives.

The article stated stingrays are not aggerrsive. It was a stroke of bad luck im my opinion. What a sad story.

talk about a strange way to go. Ive dove many times and rays are pretty peaceful. Must have aggeitated one real bad and had the misfortune of taking the stinger right to the heart (ouch) very sad. That cat was a colorful character.

I liken this to a gambler betting on favourites. Most of the time you win,but when the upset hits you lose big. However gamblers risk money while he risked his life.

The guy was so passionate about what he did, and was obviously doing what he was put on this earth to do. Very few people really live like he did doing what he loved. Condolences to his wife and daughter and his entire family.

    Rest in peace, Crock Hunter

Wow a stingray, didnt expect that to take the Crocodile Hunter down.

Truly a sad thing to hear about. He loved his work, and the all the animals and things he use to aggravate.

    R.I.P. Steve Irwin.

Irwin was in the area to film pieces for a show called "The Ocean's Deadliest" with Philippe Cousteau, grandson of Jacques, according to Stainton.

But weather had prevented the crew from doing work for that program, Stainton said, so Irwin decided to do some softer features for a new children's TV show he was doing with his daughter, Bindi.

They showed some of his programs tonight. Talk about a guy who loved life! Unbelievably sad for his kids. He has the cutest little daughter, who loves him to death (no other way to put it). And he still had all these dreams to train his kids with the crocs, and pass their zoo on to them as his parents had to him. Tragic.

It was a matter of time this would happen.

Here is another spin...with two young children why would yopu do risky stuff like this??

Its a tragedy but was very preventable if he changed his life style

What kind of pussy statement is this?! So anyone with children should NOT be driving race cars, serving in the military, working as a cop or fireman, playing contact sports, working as a lumberjack, deep sea fishing, etc, etc, etc, ad nauseum.

He did this for the same reason a lot of people do things: It's their life, their passion, it's who they are.

Seeing that this is a gambling forum, I'll take WillieBee's excellent point a step further and also ask jj ... If you had a couple of kids at home you had to provide for, why are you gambling?

Dealing with unpredicatable animals is playing with fire

Nascar is not playing with fire, cops and fireman are very safe jobs period.

Fighting in a war is in my book is extremely dangerous and many had no options but to sign up and make something of their lives. The ONLY heros in my book are soldiers and handicapped children and adults.

Deaths occur in all types of jobs but this guy was just playing with to much fire.

    A classic.

I think we are all little shocked and stunned here .

To further use a gambling analogy ...

... he should have stuck to the species he knew. He was the Crocodile Hunter ... not the Stingray Hunter. Bit like being great at tennis betting and having a dabble at basketball which you dont really know. Dangerous stuff.

What was he doing with the stingray? He must have been poking it or something as it wouldnt just, well, not like the way he was looking at him or something.

I think we should be told. Seems very suspicious ... what with the Australian elections coming up later in the year.

    Seriously, very sad.

"X are one of the most lethal insects on the planet. Its venom can kill within 10 seconds giving no chance to the victim. I have one in my hand here."

Thats the kind of thing he did best.

The story I read this morning is that stingray got in between the cameraman and Irwin ... You can imagine they were pretty close filming underwater ... Being in between them, he may have felt a bit threatened.

I too thought this was bound to happen, the odds were against him in the long run, living on the edge for so long. Maybe he made some kind of a mistake, maybe it was bad luck in this particular situation, maybe both, but it's very hard to stay sharp every time.

    Thank you Steve Irwin, R.I.P.
