NYRA said that with higher purses from the casino, there would be bigger fields and a higher caliber of horses this winter. Didn't work out that way. They run 75k handicaps several times a week, usually have 5 or 6 starters. Wonder how long it will take the states to realize they are wasting money with increased purses and run the casinos apart from the racetracks?

    aqueduct is a gold mine

but the small fields are a strange phenomena

in the uk and ireland they get 20 horses entered for less than 10k

there must be something wrong with the economics of owning a horse, the industry can be saved

also, they should shift the money to claiming races, those overnight handicaps NEVER FILL anyway unless they are on the grass

Aqueduct used to close for the winter, until they came up with the great idea of the inner track. Think what a gold mine Aqueduct would be without the track, just a casino.

There aren't many players left. At least not in Vegas. Maybe the tracks milked them dry? There are only a handful of regular players left here. Some of the old timers tell me about how big horse racing used to be. Might just be a generational thing. Pretty rare to see any serious handicapper that's under 50 in Vegas.

By the way, there's a nice pick 6 carryover ($162k I think) at Santa Anita tomorrow (today, whatever).

Ridiculously small fields and insane takeouts is why Aqueduct is a terrible track to bet on.

poker has replaced horse racing with the younger generations. I can go to gulfstream and see 100 people betting on horses and 400 in their poker room. Television has made these 21 year olds think they are great poker players all they have to do is put on a hoodie and act tough. Most of these youth are too stupid to figure out how to read a form book.

I think two more years and they winterize Belmont and run year round while Aqueduct is just a casino/convention center

The takeout on exactas and doubles are the best in the country at Aqueduct and the w/p/s take is better than 99% of the rest. The only circuit with better w/p/s is the California tracks but Aqueduct/NYRA isn't much more so overall Aqueduct has the best takeout rates in the USA unless you are a trifecta/superfecta player but everywhere is ridiculous with them.

The reason for the small fields is because most of the trainers spend the winter in Florida so Aqueduct basically becomes Finger Lakes with all those trainers moving in without the big name competition.

KC, there has been talk for years about winterizing Belmont. It would cost alot of money to do. If you've ever been to Belmont late in the fall meet, it can get really cold inside because Belmont is not heated. Belmont is one of the best and beautiful tracks in the country. 2 turf courses, 1 1/2 mile main track, large park area behind the stands. Feel that if NYRA is allowed to do this, Belmont will never be the same. Also what I meant about closing the Aqueduct track was that the state will realize that the money from the casino can and should be spent on things other than subsidizing New York racing.

Very good jockeys in the US. Trained in places like Panama. Look at their positioning compared to those jockeys we watched in Black Caviar's race. Those Ozzie riders are standing almost straight up, where the riders here are bent very low. I don't see enough Australian racing to compare, but it would really surprise me if the level of actual racing wasn't higher in the US.

Out of the game a few years but I loved Tampa Bay Downs in the winter and remember they had big fields of cheap 3-year olds, used to see lots of big prices.

Would have liked to see the "Will Pay" screen going into that last race, harthebar. I'd like to be there yelling at the screen like the guys on "Luck" - "the chalk's drifting out...the chalk's drifting out....it's the whole pot..."

If you play horses professionally you know the only real track to be playing at is Freehold. The real players play at Freehold and know the deal. It's not a place for rookies, it's for the true player.
