Default A.J. Burnett to the Pirates?

    http://espn.go.com/new-york/mlb/stor...de-sources-say

The Pirates and Yankees began their discussions with lots of common ground because New York wants to move Burnett, who is owed $33 million for the next two seasons, and Pittsburgh has been looking for a veteran starter who can provide innings.
Interesting move if it's made by Pittsburgh. Yeah they need rotation help, but paying for Burnett? Seems totally against the grain for the franchise. Idiots will probably get fleeced somehow in this deal. Buccos haven't made a good trade in quite some time.

Yea this is all but a done deal.

If this happens the Yanks will probably pay a big portion of his salary, like the Rangers did with Arod

I assume the Yankees would be picking up a large portion of his contract? Even still, pretty weird if it happens.

I would expect Yanks should pick up ~ 70-75%. Can't imagine Burnett would be too happy going there.

Reports around Pittsburgh are that the Pirates will probably pay 10-13 of the remaining 33 million contract.

yanks would certainly eat a big chunk of that contract, and probably not get much talent back in return.

Well that's not so bad if they aren't giving up much player wise. Reading that it could be a lower level pitching prospect. Pirates would actually have a pretty solid staff if guys stay healthy. Too bad what they really need is another bat.

The thing I like about Burnett is that OVER wagers have a chance at winning before the 3rd inning.

The thing I don't like about Burnett is that he appears to be a real suck.

  17. #17

Should just keep him unless they take more than half of the salary.....try to turn him into a bullpen stud

Better than just eating most of the contract and getting a bag of peanuts back in return

I don't see any other way this would go down. Am I nuts if I want our old minor leaguer back in Daniel McCutchen?

couldn't the pirates get Matt Morris to come out of retirement for 20 million or something

Going from the al east to nl central will only improve his pitching. It could be a really good deal for the pirates

This is a slam dunk for the Pirates. At first I hated it, but it makes sense. We (yes, I refer to MY pirates as "we") need a veteran and an innings eater. Obviously Burnett is a non factor for us long term....but he could really thrive in this division and if not....who cares? Send him out every 5 days and let him throw til his arm falls off. Very little risk with a slight shot at a huge return. He could look like an ace again, and we could sell him back to the Yankees or Sox after the break.

    I hear ya WV

I think I heard the Pirates stalled the talks over Garrett Jones.

I think, they realize they are the only suitors for AJ and are gonna make the Yanks sweat it out, and eat as much of that contract as possible

I'd rather have him on Yanks as a bettor. As a fan you can ship the mother fukker for a bag of baseballs.

    yes and no

in the NL central sans Pujols, Fielder, drugged- Braun, ect

it won't take alot to be "close"

If the Pirates have to give up Garrett Jones in return no way they should make this deal. For a couple of minor leaguers Pittsburgh should go for it.

Theres a lot of misguided love for Garrett Jones in this thread. I have seen nearly all of his big league games...the guy isnt something to lose sleep over. The Pirates have OF depth...and he really lacks true 1B pop. Pitching kept us in the race for the first half of the season, and pitching is the thing that could keep us in it again. There is NO NL Central lineup that looks terrifying.

This division could be the Reds to lose though, if their pitching stays mentally healthy. Im looking at you Johnny Cueto.

AJ Burnett would put up much better numbers for the Pirates. He would not have hardly any pressure on him to perform b/c Pirates fans expect the team to fail. He won't have to worry about talking to reporters after a bad outing either.

He actually has good stuff. But the Yankees are smart to get rid of him and replace him with Michael Pineda. Burnett is way too inconsistent although he wasn't the problem last year in the playoffs

  31. #31

I also have the feeling that the Pirates are getting raped in this deal in order to have a recognizable name on the roster.

Pirates are probably giving up way too much.

  32. #32

    Default

Yeah Garrett Jones is nothing to sneeze at. I'd give him up in a heartbeat.

I doubt the Pirates get Raped here. They Raped the Yanks the last few times around.

its not a deal really for competing so much as buying time with an innings eater before 2013-14 when guys like Cole, Taillon, Heredia, Allie are anchoring the rotation

A lot of folks fail to realize that since Neil Huntington took over, the Pirates have gotten much better with these deals. They no longer get "taken". Bucs raped the Yanks, and took advantage of the Braves and Nats.

Sure, we're still the Pirates...but at least Huntington is evaluating talent better. He's taking risks on players with great upside, and risking very little.

If they can make the deal for some cash and a middle prospect or utility player, then do it. We need the rotation help.
