Default W Virginia Cancel Florida St Football game?

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- West Virginia has decided to cancel its Sept. 8 football game at Florida State.

School officials informed Florida State late Friday they would pay a $350,000 escape fee to shelve the trip.

Florida State athletic director Randy Spetman said Saturday he's disappointed that West Virginia would not honor the first half of a home-and-home agreement that calls for Florida State to visit Morgantown, W.Va., next year.

The Seminoles have Murray State, South Florida and Florida on their 2012 nonconference schedule, in addition to eight Atlantic Coast Conference games.

Spetman now has a short timeline to find an opponent to replace the Mountaineers on Florida State's schedule.

Any one have more info on why?

I am a thinking since WV is closer to the Whitehouse, someone at WV must have got tipped off that something must be going down on or around the 8th down in Florida.

Big 12 mandates a 9 game conference schedule, and we had 4 out of conference games. You can ony pay 12 games. James Madison is at FedEx field, and it would have cost over $1.5 million to cancel that one, and if we cancelled one of the other two, we would only have had 5 home games, and that won't work for obvious financial reasons.

We now hate the ACC anyway for destroying the Big East, so adios FSU.

That makes sense. ACC did seek and destroy the Big East.

And for one last bit of irony, the Florida State home and home series was a result of a settlement from the Big East's lawsuit against the ACC for the first raid of Miami, Va Tech, and Boston College.

Florida State will pick up Pitt to replace West Virginia, who will now go to the Big 12 and become a permanent "also ran" in that conference starting in 2012. Pitt plays Va. Tech at home, and is moving to the ACC, probably in 2013. This will be a nice preview. Pitt is going to the ACC Coastal, and Syracuse to the ACC Atlantic. Thge ACC will play 9 conference games when these two officially join.

"Also Ran"? I don't know about that. WVU football has been solid the last 10 years. Destroyed Oklahoma in the Fiesta bowl as 8 point dogs, beat Georgia in the Sugar Bowl as 6 point dogs. Detroyed the Clemson Tigers this year in the Orange Bowl. Sure the big 12 is more competative than the Big East, but that should help recruiting. I see WVU being a prominent player in the Big 12.

Fifth place in the Big 12 is much more lucrative than second place in the Big East, which will become Conference USA II.

I agree that West virginia will become a player in the Big 12. Just not a Champion. They will get a huge home field advantage, but will have a tough time on the road. If the big 12 actually goes to 12 teams, and breaks up into two divisions, West Virginia's chances certainly improve. Still, they will have to travel to either Oklahoma or Texas every year, and that can be difficult. At any rate, I am glad to see West virginia in a competitive conference.
