sportsfun's if sports were managed as finance fund experiment

Can sports betting outperform stocks? We shall see with the sportsfun hedge fund experiment. Will keep record in this thread and either sbr spreadsheets or create one on google docs.

It seems some tried on sbr but then thread just stopped. Also some hedge funds tried in real life, and it seems it went under too, http://www.journallive.co.uk/north-e...1634-30224828/

Portfolio starts at 10,000. Any rules? For now not many. I would say limit each play to 5% or abouts. Will do most anything that can be done, props, parlays, straight bets, any sports. Fees? Let's assume 13% for now taken from top as they do with investments, annuities and the like. So Portfolio starts at 8700. Not sure if these fees are realistic but for this experiment that is the assumption.

From time to time might go with some finance commentary too since have great like for sports and finance.
Hope to keep this updated on a consistent basis. Will start Wednesday February 1, 2012 with first play maybe coming overnight.

does it matter what you call it? its still the same thing, picking games, paying juice and going bankrupt

let me give you some advice which you will not take and ultimately fail

    1. 5% is way too much, keep it max 2% per bet, 1% is even better, with 5% all it takes is a small losing streak and your bankroll will be wiped out, losing streaks will happen I assure you, even professionals have to go through it

    2. you obviously are planning to use different units per bet, bad idea, flat betting is the only way to make a profit, or at least make less losses

    3. play as little juice as possible

    play #1 : 2 team Parlay $200 to pay $337.66, Maryland +10.5 -110 and LA Kings -245

For it be to be organized as an investment vehicle, it would be like a hedge fund, commonly 2 and 20. 2% of the top yearly and 20% of any money made over the S&P or a similar index.

this can't be real.. he has to be using fake money

  18. #18

At least he's accurate in describing how fund managers blow people's savings. he's the next bernie madoff.

  19. #19

Always good to see how experiments like this go.

PS. Btw, nobody in the finance industry takes 13% off the top of you investment. Waaaay too much. Most common is a 2% annual management fee + 20% of the profits (not the gross amount). Some funds (although rarely now) do have front load fee, but it is at most 3 to 5%. Just FYI if at the end you wanna compare this to a real investment.

  20. #20

Usually a 2% management fee and a 15% incentive fee if a certain watermark is reached (% appreciation).

  21. #21

plays 11-14 don't stand a chance, so maybe need to reassess picks(pick like those when doing better), plays overall 3-11 -715.03

so good thing only an experiment, well at least sbr sportsbook points, let's hope for the better

    play 15, 150 to win 728.02, milwaukee +6, kansas state +4 and vancouver -165

  31. #31

Play 1 or 2 solid plays a day. I would also say stick to one sport, the one you know the best... you will continue to lose betting sucker bets aka parlays.
