Default APOLOGY Thread: Come clean if you suspected JonBenet's parents

BOULDER, Colo. - A man suspected in the slaying of 6-year-old beauty queen JonBenet Ramsey nearly a decade ago was arrested Wednesday in Thailand, the district attorney said in the long-awaited breakthrough in one of the nation's most lurid unsolved murder cases.
    I apologize.

I admit it and I apologize. I am always willing to admit when I am wrong and I was way wrong about this one.

Rest in peace, Patsy Ramsey. It looks like justice is about to be served.

For anyone that didn't hear the press conference, it's very far from a sure thing that this guy is the killer.

John Mark Karr, 41, a former elementary school teacher, has confessed to murdering 6-year-old JonBenet Ramsey in 1996. Karr, an American, was arrested in an apartment located in Bangkok, Thailand. Karr called the murder an "accident."

That's closer to a sure thing than the parents ever were. I guess it's just not quite as good a story.

I don't think it was the parents either, but I wouldn't put the odds on this guy as any greater than 50/50.

Confessions to high profile murder cases are a dime a dozen.
I also am dubious about the guy saying things about the case that nobody knew. If anybody watches Court TV you know everything about the case.

    Hmm, Well, May NOT!

    Pulled this off AP:

"Questions arose about Karr's story when his ex-wife, Lara, told KGO-TV in San Francisco that he was with her in Alabama the entire Christmas season when JonBenet was killed."

"His father, Wexford Karr, told the Denver Post that his son had been deeply interested in the JonBenet Ramsey case and had researched a book on the subject. KGO said Lara Karr told it her ex-husband had also been fascinated by the case of another murdered girl, Polly Klaas, which had attracted wide publicity."

Could be this dude is just one of those "confessors"

After reading the above, I hv serious doubts now he killed her ...

By Sue Lindsay and Charlie Brennan, Rocky Mountain News
    August 17, 2006
Legal and law enforcement experts have begun to express outward skepticism about claims by a teacher that he killed JonBenet Ramsey.
John Mark Karr told reporters in a press conference last night in Thailand he was with the 6-year-old beauty queen when she died nearly 10 years ago. He said the death was accidental, as part of a botched kidnapping effort. When asked how he entered the family’s Boulder home, he declined to comment.

But investigators in Thailand have told the Associated Press that Karr has made several other statements to them, including claims that he picked JonBenet up from school the day she was killed and that he drugged her. JonBenet was on Christmas vacation at the time, so school was not in session, and there was no evidence of drugs found in JonBenet’s body during the autopsy.

So far, there is no paper trail of Karr being in Colorado. Police in Boulder said today that they have no record of ever having contact with him.

Denver defense lawyer Larry Pozner said Karr's news conference confession, televised late last night, was bizarre.

"Is this just an obsessive guy craving his 15 minutes of fame? There are those people who confess under circumstances where we immediately know, this is real. This isn’t one of them," Pozner said. "We have to withhold judgment because he has not given enough facts for us to decide: Do we have a wack-job or a murderer?"

Denver lawyer and former prosecutor Craig Silverman expressed similar reservations.

"This confession is nonsensical and it appears to be delusional. To claim this was an accident is ridiculous. It's hard to imagine a more intentional, deliberate murder than hitting a girl with sufficient force to split her skull open and to fashion a garrote and twist it until she stops breathing."

A former investigator knowledgeable about the case watched a press conference by Boulder District Attorney Mary Lacy this morning and said he was concerned about what she said - and didn’t say.

"Her statements about, 'I wish that we could have continued (the investigation) in this vein, rather than in the public eye,' I agree with her in that regard. Because, for her sake, I hate to predict what’s going to come down if this whole things falls apart and they drag a guy 12,000 miles back from Bangkok only to get his 15 minutes of fame and a free ticket back to America."

    In case anyone missed it:

BOULDER, Colo. - Prosecutors abruptly dropped their case against John Mark Karr in the slaying of JonBenet Ramsey and released him Monday, saying DNA tests failed to put him at the crime scene despite his repeated insistence he killed the 6-year-old beauty queen.

The move came just a week and a half after the 41-year-old schoolteacher was arrested in Thailand and put on a plane to the U.S. in what was regarded as a remarkable break in the decade-old murder mystery that had cast suspicion on JonBenet's parents.

District Attorney Mary Lacy said Karr emerged as a suspect in April after he spent several years exchanging e-mails and later telephone calls with a Colorado professor in which he admitted responsibility for the slaying.

According to court papers, Karr told the professor he accidentally killed JonBenet during sex and that he tasted her blood after he injured her vaginally. But officials at the Denver crime lab conducted DNA tests last Friday on a cheek swab taken from Karr and failed to connect him to the crime.

"This information is critical because ... if Mr. Karr's account of his sexual involvement with the victim were accurate, it would have been highly likely that his saliva would have been mixed with the blood in the underwear," Lacy said in court papers.

She also said authorities found no evidence Karr was in Boulder at the time of the slaying.

Karr was released from custody by the Boulder County sheriff, who said California authorities had not asked for him to be detained to face child pornography charges in that state. Karr's whereabouts were not immediately known.

Defense attorney Seth Temin expressed outrage that Karr was even arrested.

"We're deeply distressed by the fact that they took this man and dragged him here from Bangkok, Thailand, with no forensic evidence confirming the allegations against him and no independent factors leading to a presumption he did anything wrong," Temin said.

Lacy defended the decision to arrest Karr. She said that there was no way to take a cheek swab from him without alerting him that he was under investigation, and that would have created an "unacceptable risk that he would flee."

Also, prosecutors detained Karr after he began to describe an interest in several girls in Thailand "in much the same terms that he had described his interest in JonBenet," Lacy wrote. Shortly before he was arrested, authorities confirmed he was involved with at least one of the girls, Lacy said.
Great, so they found a real sicko, brought him here first class, and let him go. Brilliant work.

For those that don't want to read the whole thing, here's the best part:

Absolutely brilliant job of pedophile catch and release. So if you ever find yourself in trouble in Thailand, you all know how to get a free first-class flight back to the States.
