Default OT: John 3:16...Where are thou?

It's more for the ol' school, but does anybody remember seeing the John 3:16 banner come out at just about every major sporting event through the 80's and into the early 1990s?...Superbowl, World Series, NBA finals; I think even a Stanley Cup game or two, you could always count on the biblical reference. Now, 3:16 seems to have gone the way of the dodo...Did the 3:16ers (And I assume it was a whole battalion of them) just pack it in, or are they out there still, stealthily raising the numbers when the time is right and I'm just missing it?

I definitely remember buddy with the rainbow hair-do and the John 3:16. In my memory it was just one (ubiquitous) guy but maybe there were a bunch of them.

I was even inspired at one point to open a bible just to find out what the heck he was so insistent about. I don't remember what it said but I remember my reaction which was basically, "That's it? What does that have to do with the price of tea in Saskatchewan?"

Yes, Rainbow Man. I actually forgot about him. He sure could get around...Must have been loaded with coin, and seemed to love his sports as much as the Bible...I always thought somebody would have picked up the cause and the placard, but I guess it never happened.

the last i heard about rainbow man was he hocked everything he owned to get his 15 minutes of fame by going to all those sporting events. also, i could have swore somebody told me a long time ago he was in jail for something.

I actually saw a short documentary several years ago about “Rainbow Man.” It was indeed one guy (though maybe there were copycats who did similar things later). He wasn’t just a guy having some fun by seeking a little notoriety; he was clearly unbalanced. He ended up in trouble with the law. I don’t remember the details. I vaguely remember he was holed up in a hotel or somewhere with cops surrounding the place. I don’t recall if he took somebody hostage or was saying he was going to kill himself or had a bomb or what; it’s been too long since I saw it.

I don’t know if the documentary would be obtainable today. I think it was just called “Rainbow Man.”

The Bible verse is one asserting that Jesus is God’s only son and you have to believe that to get eternal life.

Here's a LINK about the guy. Pretty bizarre story and at the same time probably shouldn't be too surprising that the guy was off his rocker a bit.

Actually the one I’m referring to I saw in the theater. It was about a half hour long and was part of a double feature with a documentary on the ubiquitous “Andre has a Posse” graffiti.

Wow.....So much for a "feel good" ending to that particular story.

Forget freedom of religion. Give me freedom from religion.
