it seems like every year i see people talk about trying a new system for football. now that the NFL preseason kicks off later tonight, i'm just wondering if anyone here is going to try something new this year ?

I mean I don't call mine a system, and it's definitely not new...just play 7 games on Saturday each weekend and bet 10 non-Saturday game per year (in college football)...increase my units as the season gets going and then decrease them as the season nears...playing 25 or so bowl games lightly as well...has worked out pretty well for me over the years...

I think it's called the Martingale System. I am going to bet one unit on a game. If I lose, I bet 2 units on the next game. If I lose, I bet 4 units on the next game. When you eventually win, you are up a unit! Rinse and repeat!! This systems is a sure winner...I mean, I NEVER lose three or more in a row!! In fact, I know a guy and he wins about 33% of his picks. Just following his picks will ensure that every third bet produces an overall one unit profit! How can you go wrong?!?

You're kidding right?? The Martingale system has been around forever and is a proven loser. If you start out only betting 1%of your bankroll as each unit and double up on losses you're broke if you lose 7 straight. If you start out only betting 0.5% of your bankroll ($50 on a $10k bankroll) your broke after 8 losses. 7 or 8 straight losses is hard to do but it happens and if you bet long enough it will definately happen. The only way the Martingale system works is if you're willing to only win a very small amount on each wager. If you have 10k to work with do you really want to bother with $25 bets? If this system actually worked casinos would have closed 50 years ago because that's when people started using it (roulette and blackjack tables).

As JDK192 stated DO NOT do the Martingale. If, and when the system fails, you lose it all. You dont be there when that happens.

I'm not a parlay player at all (haven't done one this calendar year), but I'm betting a 2 team parlay on every preseason game on the underdog moneyline and under the total. I've never tried it before, but history says dogs are usually good plays and so is the under, so I'm trying it.

Yes, I was making a joke. But I got the response I was looking for. It seems like at least once a year I hear about this "new system" that guarantees you'll win because "no one can lose that many in a row." I just shake my head. Agreed -- Martingale sucks!!

I am really not sure there is a great "system" out there. There are strong angles, good handicapping methods and positive analysis techniques. But a proven "system" is almost impossible to find. I am not a big fan of trends either -- i.e. take a home dog coming off back-to-back ATS road losses against teams that missed the playoffs the year before. I just can't get excited about those type of trends. They are based on previous season data and teams change a lot from year to year. I am a big believer (esp in baseball) in trends during a particular season.
