YES it has.
I mean think about it. The games used to be fun! You would have a few buddies over, and of course a sucker . Then we would sit around and drink and play some serious 5 card stud hand with a semi-painful ante. Then things would get a little whacky with some 7 card stud hands with low spade in the hole splits the pot, maybe a follow the bitch game, deuces wild(only if they are up).Now its all Texas Bored'em....errrrr....Texas Hold'em. And what about the all-in craze???? SERIOUSLY; If you checked and then raised all-in on the same hand in my neighborhood, you'd be beaten severely and never ever invited back. I think the friendly game of poker is gone....too bad. ![]() |

we still have poker games around here like that at the pool hall and at the track john. i mean you can only play so much texas hold'um before you get bonkers.
as far as the check and raise stuff goes. well, that has always been allowed around these parts, although you sure do get cussed out over it if you do it. |

The poker explosion has also brought alot of new dead money to the game, but you do make a good point John.

Technology is a social killer. I remember when I was a kid everyone getting together with the TV guide to talk about what movie they would watch. You had to sit close because the tiny bubble screen only looked decent head-on. Now, everyone has their own plasma. LCDs in the fridge, in the bathroom, even at the urinals. Well at least there is the Xbox. Oh wait, now when you want to play Madden with a buddy you IM him to connect to the network.

I'm talking about when buddies come over or even Uncle Fred and the brother-in-laws. I tried to deal a game of 5 card draw the other night and no one wanted to change from Texas Bore'dem! Eveyone thinks they are a rising poker star...frigging gay if you ask me. ![]() |

That's my point. TV is bringing more people to poker. New people only see holdem on TV, so that's what they want to play. Many new people think that holdem is the only game people play. Since day one at Planet Poker (first play for money poker site), online poker sites have been spreading more than just holdem. Online poker isn't fueling the Holdem trend, it is just following it. TV is driving it. I know ESPN tried airing some 7stud, Omaha, and Omaha high/low, but those games really don't work well on TV. |

Well, it depends on your perspective whether or not it's ruined the game. If you like to play and you like to make money, then it certainly hasn't. If you ever play lower limit, short handed games you know what I am talking about...
Incidentally, I don't play much but when I play it has to be a WSEX. In the past four weeks, averaging about an hour each night before I go to bed, I have had $1,500 in rakes kicked back to me. That number is astounding to me. That's $1,500 of extra cash I have to bet with because of WSEX's no rake policy. Anyone that plays anywhere else is crazy, IMO. |

While we all feel nostalgic for the days when we had some buddies come over and we smoked cigars, drank beer, acted like asses, and played some poker, how realistic would that actually be for most people these days? We all seem to be going in 10 directions at once, and at least in my case, my old card-playing buddies complain about not being able to find time for their own kids, let alone get out on a Wednesday night to play poker. Do I miss it? You bet I do. But it seems as much a part of the past as the old black Ford Interceptor I used to go on road trips in.
But my love for the game never diminished and online poker has given me the chance to play again, anytime I want to. I have discovered a new depth to the game that I would never have guessed at playing with my old buds. I can find levels where the play can be dizzying, yet I always learn something. When I want to just relax and play, I can go fishing at any number of well-stocked sites. If I get bored, I play H.O.R.S.E. for the sake of variety. At least for me, online poker hasn’t ruined the game; it has reconnected me to it. |

I'll tell you one thing that online poker has done. It's provided you with millions of allies in the fight to protect your right to gamble online.
As far as I'm concerned, until this spectre is behind us we shouldn't be making remarks that might piss each other off. We need each other. |

online poker helped the game alot. i was skeptical at first but if u really want to play some quality poker... joined room with some *heavy* money in it. players wont throw money just like that if the blinds are high and if you have the guts to put down ur money to make some.. rather than wasting time playing for fun in small tables.

The all ins could drive anyone nuts, I think you will find that with tourneys most, people play differently in cash games, as opposed to tournament chips, its like practicing in fun mode, everyone’s all in on every other hand, its fun money. Personally I enjoy my 5/10 NL holdem. Poker by nature is not a friendly game, looking for a friendly game online is like my 16 year old daughter looking for a chaperone on myspace..... I do remember from the friendly games I played years ago like you describe is that we never had them as often as most of us would have wanted, everyone always wanted to play more but getting a game going took lots of effort. All in all it comes down to nothing could ever replace your friendly home games and you could never replicate at home what you have online, for that matter they could not replicate the online poker community in Vegas, you could not replicate it anywhere but online. Good Luck to everyone from our family to yours!! www.PokerRoomReview.com Over 300 poker rooms listed in the PokerRoomReview.com rating guide. |
