The plan is to help with mortgages to offset some BAD interest rates and other preditory practices used by banks in the year leading to this mess.

would you rather have a few hundred/thousand people in your city beggin, getting welfare, prostituting, inevitably using drugs, then stealing... or help them pay their house and keep them working and honest?

Obama is turning the country into Soviet Union. They had subsidized government mortgage payments and we all know what happened to them. If some idiot that made $30,000 a year bought a $300,000 house with interest only payments why does the government have to rescue him by subsidizing his mortgage payment? To Pavvy and Sinister: No one is saying these are optimal conditions and obviously in normal circumstances the government shouldnt get involved...However these are not normal circumstances and the government has to get involved. Or we could just sit back and let our country crubble

This is how the capitalist system works: Those that can't make money they fail. All banks that can't make any money because of greed and bad loan policies should be left out in the cold to dissolve. All mortgage owners that live in houses they can't afford because of bad mortgage decisions they should be foreclosed and learn how to save 20% down before they move out of their apartments.

The capitalist system worked in this country for 250 years. Why change it now to communism and try to help every stupid mortgage holder and every stupid bank that exposed themselves to unnecessary risk?

ok.. lets say all this happens.. they let the mortgages go into foreclosure.. they let the banks fail..

write up something on how this was a good thing. How does your neighborhood look? do you still have a job? whats the crime rate like? can you walk safely to the store? how about your loved-ones?

No shit, I should of bought a 5 bedroom 4 bathroom new house a couple of years ago on an interest only loan. Not everyone should own a house, if you make $25,000 a year you shouldn't be able to have a $300,000 home. If you bail out the lending institutions, you have to restructure the mortgages too. You can't bail out one and not the other. This debate has long passed. This is a necessary course of action as an extension of the financial sector bailout, even though I disagreed with the original bailout to begin with. And FYI, the banks are to blame for this, not any individual party. Stop with the partisan BS. The bill that allowed preditory mortgage lending was passed by a Republican Congress and signed by Clinton. Blame the lending lobbyists and the greedy banks. You should already know your politicians are bought and paid for with the current political ruleset. We got freerolled by the financial sector. Simple as that.
