Manos: Baseball equals Money
August 9, 2005

Yes, the 2005 football campaign is almost upon us and for those of you who enjoy pre-season contests, the season has already begun. However, there is one thing to remember – BASEBALL SEASON IS FAR FROM OVER.
I always refer to baseball as a “bankroll building” sport, in part, because if offers betting on a daily basis and affords you the opportunity to make plus money wagers. In this sense baseball not football is the sport which allows you the best chance to dramatically increase the size of your wagering bankroll.
As the summer draws to a close, often times the gambling public will turn its attention to the prospect of football and ignore the stretch run of the baseball season. Sheer foolishness! The first weekend of the NFL is scheduled for Sept. 11. Between now and then nearly, 300 baseball games will be played. If you count sides, run lines, and totals, that is nearly 1,500 possible wagering propositions before football season begins. With 1,500 options a solid handicapper can find a lot of value.
Here are a few additional reasons not to disregard the remainder of the baseball season:
1) Betting on a daily basis keeps you in tune. By this I mean that often times handicapping or betting successfully can be about developing a routine, pattern, or rhythm. Keeping track of baseball on a daily basis can keep you focused on your gambling interests, so that when football kicks off you won’t be starting “cold”.
2) Everybody loves Money. The more money you have at your disposal the greater your position of strength when wagering. Using baseball to “build your bankroll” for football can give you an advantage from a financial perspective. Entering the football campaign at plus money allows you to wager knowing that you are playing with “house money”, so to speak. So far this baseball season, those of you who have followed my selections all year are up over 41 units. That is 41 “extra” units of profit that will be at your disposal for football season….. not a bad start.
3) The WILDCARD RACES will keep things interesting. In previous decades, sports bettors might have become less interested toward the end of baseball season because the pennant races had already been decided and they had concerns about how teams out of the race would prepare or perform. This is no longer the case. In the NL you may have as many as seven teams fighting it out till the last week of the season trying to secure the Wildcard berth. In the AL, you may have as many as five teams still alive down the stretch. With that many teams convinced they could be playoff bound, bettors should still be able to find plenty of teams or situations that are worth wagering on, even as the season winds down.
4) “Futures” will still be available as the baseball season concludes.
While some may be pessimistic about the money making opportunities still available during the stretch run of the extensive 162 game major league baseball season, I remain optimistic and see the chance for even greater profit. The poet Wilson once wrote,
“Twixt optimist and pessimist
The difference is droll:
The optimist sees the doughnut
The pessimist sees the hole!”
As I’ve said before, football is KING, however, there is still plenty of time left to enjoy the nuances of betting bases. Money making opportunities will abound down the stretch if you can just see the DOUGHnut.
Aloha and Good Luck with your wagers!
