Anyone not present at SBR during early 2006 never experienced the joy which was rep points. Rep points were a system where you could click on a button and give another poster some rep points - alternatively you could click another button to take them away from a poster. Although it took them longer than a retarded chimp to figure it out, some people eventually discovered that collusion between e-friends could lead to them accomplishing high amount of rep pooints; similarly, block voting could give posters whey didn't like a negative level of points.

Sounds boring, but this created near-anarchy at the forum for a few weeks. Some people openly wept when they kept getting negative points:

Some people valued rep points over everything in their life and threatened to leave the forum if rep points weren't brought back.

People who didn't live through it can't quite imagine. Those links are only a taste.

In a way, it is surprising SBR doesn't do it. There seems to be a general support of drama-for-drama's sake around here.

It doesn't get more drama-for-drama's sake than rep points.

But I have to vote no. I understand the vote of, Yes - For The Comedy, but I can't do it. I can't. I don't believe I am without a sense of humor but mine doesn't work that way.

It was godawful.

And it was the destruction of innocence. I knew we had some basically distasteful, scammish types around - but that's when I learned there are bona fide psychos among us.

I started that why does SBR always jump the gun without doing any research thread.

Dozer writes "great stuff" but gave me a positive rating. That had me laughing.

Raiders was one of a few guys who were serious as a heart attack about reputation points. You could practically feel the forum vibrating with his blood pressure fluctuations when he shot off to a huge minus right off the kicker.

Newer guys reading this thread may think taco was kidding when he referred to guys scamming the system. No. 100% true. People were devoting personal time and effort trying to artificially manipulate those dopey numbers.

My favorite Raiders memory was the little messages he would send along with the minuses he would zap me with. That was an eye opener. Like I would make some kind of common-knowledge comment on the forum about a crap book he was shilling for. Like I might say something like, " Bet Royal has been known to slow-pay."

At the time, it was about as uncontroversial a thing as you could say. There was no element of opinion involved. It would be on a par with saying something like, "The Detroit Lions have had some poor seasons."

So he'd zap me with a minus and there was room for a few words explanation and he'd say something like, YOU CAN'T HELP BUT LIE!!!

It was fukked up. Nobody in the universe except him and me was ever going to see it. So it wasn't like there was a chance of tricking a few gullible newbies. But between the shilling and the rep points, neither of which was going well, he would get so frothing-at-the-mouth messed up, he would lose track of the fact that his shilling was a calculated con and he would make the leap to actually believing himself.

Strange to see.
