Default OT: Has anyone ever bought a car on ebay?

I am thinking about buying a car and have found that some of the "best value" for the amount I want to spend are on ebay. Has anyone done this? If so, did you have it shipped or did you fly (or drive) to pick it up? Was there any unpleasant (or nice) surprises when you finally took delivery? Did you call ahead and ask questions? Private sale or dealer sale?

Thanks!

Not bought but I just sold one, some guy in Nigeria offered me about $5000 over the market price. The cheque cleared and I'm just about to leave to go to meet the shipper and hand over the keys and pay him $1500 from the extra $5000 to cover customs. Great deal!

Love it when they used to hotwire cars on the Dukes of Hazzard.

Bought two. Both were private & local so picked them up.

Nasty surprise: one blew its engine 8 months later and the other 3 months later (relatives fault for driving it with a broken water pump)

Another surprise was the former had an unpaid ticket for toll violation. I ended up paying it since I couldnt register it with an outstanding ticket. Previous owner refused to compensate me.

Just walk into any Ford/GM/Chrysler dealership today and make them an offer for 1/2 the sticker price. More than likely you will leave the lot with one of their cars.

I think it would have to be a specialty car, like an old GTO, or something to make travel worthwhile.

If you want a used Honda, then Craigslist is the way to go.

I purchased my Infiniti G35 on Ebay. I live in Atlanta, so I flew down to Tampa and picked up the vehicle and drove it home. Overall, the vehicle has performed well. The paint seemed to have some overspray on it from previous work, however, you cannot tell that from the photos. Just do the CarFax report and only pay a small deposit, that way you aren't risking much if the vehicle is not what you thought it was going to be.
