    Default OT - 6/10/2006 Puzzle

Yesterday's answer was "Abner Doubleday". Kudos to scottyy11 (with assists to Mudcat and isetcap) for piecing that one together.

    Day 1:
    • Brandon Webb, Freddy Sánchez, and Derek Jeter arrived earliest.
    • Next came Goose Gossage who surprised no one by showing up alone.
    • A few minutes later Suzuki and Ríos slowly sauntered in.
    • It wasn't until after lunch, just when Vernon Wells, Dwight Gooden, Vladimir Guerrero, and Shawn Green finally found their way through the door, that Posada made his hasty getaway.

    Day 2:
    • González, González, González, and Gonzalez arrived first.
    • Gary Carter arrived next, which was certainly nice, but unfortunately Nolan Ryan was nowhere to be found.
    • Second basemen usually travel in packs and that day was no exception. It must have been five or six of them that came next.
    • Last to arrive were the drunken Charlie Sheen, Who, and George Sisler. Their presence was so offensive that Yogi Berra had to leave.

Name the other member of this infamous duo.

It's hard to know what to even do with that. Maybe some discussion can get some teamwork going.

One thing that jumps out at me is that, for all the seemingly random arrivals - (and I don't know if all the detailed description really needs to be analyzed or is just a smokescreen. I'm thinking smokescreen.) - but both days culminate in Yankee catchers leaving.

So that's where I am. Trying to think of someone's name which may be made up of compound words, that somehow captures that (and from there, it should be apparent who they were part of an infamous duo with).

Red herrings are often a part of these puzzles.

In this case all that's really relevant is the order in which each group arrived (or was described as being absent). Every person mentioned is obviosuly in some way a baseball player (whether in real life or otherwise) although there's really only one piece of information you need to know about each player.

In the end you will have to do some very basic arithemetic computations (nothing more complex than addition or sutraction) to come up with the answer.

Looks like two Yankee catchers rolled out...

I wonder if this is a number thing. I'm bad with numbers.

Excellent guess, but the answer is the name of a person (a person other than Dr. 45).

The only way that Charlie Sheen makes sense in baseball is that he was a pitcher in the movie Major League. "Who" could mean "Who" the first baseman from that Abbot & Costello "Who's on first?"

Maybe it just has something to do with the players' positiions?

    Brandon Webb is a pitcher = 1
    Freddy Sanchez is a 3rd Baseman = 5
Derek Jeter plays Short Stop = 6

    1+5+6 = 12

I thought of that too and started fiddling with the position numbers (i.e. pitcher = 1, catcher = 2 etc.) but there have been gonzales' at probably every position.

That would also be a sticking point if it had to do with uniform numbers.

That's far from the only thing I am confused about though.

    Isn't Freddie Sanchez a 4 (second base)?

Suzuki and Rios play in Right Field = 9

His player card has him listed as a 3rd baseman and he played at 3rd base today in the Pirates shutout win over San Francisco.

Vernon Wells CF (Toronto) = 8
Dwight Gooden: What's the position number for a crackhead? = 1
Guerrero and Green both play RF = 9
    *Posada is a catcher = 2

    8+1+(9X2)-2 = 25

*Posada left the gathering hence the subtraction.

You can expect this kind of behavior from someone who is subjected The New York Times every day of his life.

So the 12 is questionable as it could be 11 or 13 I suppose depending on what position you want to put Sanchez in.

If Ganchrow is the manager, I wish he'd let us know what position Sanchez is playing.

If you think it matters (and it may or may not) I always thought of Sánchez as a shortstop ...

    It must be Ashley.

I would never have gotten to that without isetcap doing the legwork, though.

Love this stuff, by the way, and a refreshing change from the Hot or Not polls (not that there's anything wrong with them).

    Thanks for posting these Ganch.

P.S. I also almost gave up at the 'lary _ate' stage.

Sánchez plays short, hence the first letter of the first word is 'M' not 'L', so it's actually 'Mary _ate' or 'Mary Kate'.

As in Mary Kate Olsen, the twin sister of Ashley who is the other member of the infamous duo.
